  1. SA 66-3published at 28 overs

    Amla 33, Du Plessis 4

Hashim Amla is looking more and more confident as this innings progresses and he uses the reverse-sweep perfectly yet again. Picking the Moeen delivery in the flight, he sends the ball crashing to the third man boundary.

    Five from the over.

I think Hales' selection is a no-brainer for the West Indies series. He's in great form and we know he can do it against international attacks. He just needs to be encouraged to adopt a 'Warner style' attacking approach

Couldn't agree with you more, Mark. I've been fortunate enough to see Davies a few times this season - he can bat.

Change in the bowling as James Anderson is replaced by Toby Roland-Jones.

Here we go then, a Hashim Amla masterclass with three solid boundaries.

The first - full and wide, he drives and it's sliced through point.

The second - another drive but much more convincing, getting forward and timing it through the covers.

The third - sweet as a nut, drilled through mid-off.

First mention of 22-year-old, wicketkeeper and opening batsman Alex Davies at Lancs. Over 600 runs at a healthy average but probably too offensive for England up top? Either that, or too small! He's having a great season.

Hashim Amla, your team is 44-3, chasing 380, and what do you decide to do? A cheeky little reverse-sweep. Not once, but twice. The first one fails, he looks a bit foolish. The second one, however, races past a wrong-footed Ben Stokes at slip for four.

Richard Hodgson: Should a ton by Hales in Division Two against Derbyshire really be recognised? Give me Haseeb any day.

Farhan: Why does Rory Burns of Surrey hardly get a mention? FC average of 42 - can bat for long periods as shown in recent game v Hants.

  7. SA 43-3published at 25 overs

James Anderson is so, so good. To bowl like he has, day in day out, over the course of his career is just tremendous. He's come a long way since that young lad with a dodgy barnet first entered our lives.

A bit less nip and movement, but good line and length. Hashim Amla pushes the final ball to gully, but it's another maiden for Anderson. He has gone for just 11 runs in his 10 overs.

The clouds are here and England have bowled some beauties. 24 overs gone and the seam is still nice and proud. They need that nice, hard feel in their hand.

  9. SA 43-3published at 24 overs

Moeen Ali continues. Du Plessis is shuffling across his crease, hopping back and forward and patting the ball down to either short leg or back to the bowler. Six standard deliveries, six standard defensive shots. Maiden.

England need to get rid of Hashim Amla here.

As each ball passes, he is looking more comfortable and secure. He is the one man that can bat through the cause for South Africa,

    Amla 12, Du Plessis 2

Crowd are a little on the quiet side at Old Trafford, even the popular James Anderson doesn't seem to perk them up. I reckon it's just the daily post-lunch lull.

Oh hold on, they have come alive because of an absolute beauty from Jimmy! Back of a length, just outside the off stump, flicks Amla's hips and through to Bairstow behind the wicket. England ask the question, but there was no bat. Cracking delivery.

Keaton Jennings is a yard too deep at short leg. He needs to come in a pace.

  13. SA 42-3published at 22 overs

Was there any bat on that? Moeen with a bit of bounce, the ball ricochets off the pad (and maybe bat) and a despairing forward dive by Jennings at short leg, who just can't reach the looped up ball. I think it was just pad.

A big lbw shout from England, but not big enough for them to review it. Replays show that it was hitting outside the line. Another fine Moeen over.

Jimmy Anderson takes the ball and is getting good rise off the turf, a straighter one stinging Hashim Amla on the left glove. Ouch.

    Maiden.

Over in the County Championship, Lancashire are batting against Hampshire. Haseeb Hameed has one run in 41 minutes and 20 balls. His partner Alex Davies is 40 off 34 balls.

Yes, great captaincy from Joe Root. There needed to be a leg slip in for Moeen Ali and he got one in.

  17. SA 41-3published at 20 overs

Faf du Plessis is the new batsman in but it will be Hashim Amla to face the first ball after lunch.

Turn and bounce, Moeen Ali causing havoc in this first over.

Amla clips one past Keaton Jennings at short leg and they run through for a single, bringing the skipper on strike. There's an attacking field as a leg slip is brought in, but Du Plessis sees off the rest of the over.

Moeen, with 118 Test wickets to his name, needs four more wickets to go past Phil Tufnell.

Toby Roland-Jones has this knack of getting wickets eh? On the stroke of the interval, the seamer dismissed Temba Bavuma, courtesy of an England review and an overturned decision.
