Ian Meth: Lots of talk of Hales but Jason Roy continues to score runs at every level and is technically very correct.

Heino Kuhn may well have had just one more innings to get a score and save his Test career.

    He failed.

The opener played tentatively at Anderson, nibbled at one and was pounced on by Cook in the slips.

After a short rain delay, we were treated to an absolute beauty from Stuart Broad to dismiss Dean Elgar early on.

It was almost unplayable. But don't just take my word for it, see for yourself.

Greg Williams: Hales is doing a nice job for Notts, came in at five today, better option than Malan?? Stoneman for Jennings is a given.

Dark clouds in Manchester first thing, as England came out with intent and looking to play some shots.

But it didn't last very long, as both Broad and Anderson fell to Morne Morkel. South Africa wrapped up the innings in a quarter of an hour.

Cheers Shamoon, a good stint! I would say we'll see you again for the final session of the day, but I'm not overly confident that we'll get there.

South Africa on the ropes, will need something special and a little bit of grit from their middle order to see out the rest of this day.

Time for some clips from this morning/early afternoon ....

England are all over South Africa here and they may well finish the match off in the afternoon session.

My stint from the Keyboard End is now over and I'll hand you over to my cricket-loving colleague Kal Sajad.

    Enjoy.

It was one of those tiny, tiny little edges. Bairstow and the slips went up immediately. They obviously heard something and the bat was away from everything. The ball was in the corridor, but it didn't do anything.

England's bowling was outstanding. I'm glad they got out quickly this morning, the lead was enough and it was just a waste of 15/20 minutes.

What an end to the session, what a review!

England go up and are confident they have got their man, they have heard a nick, but umpire Kumar Dharmasena says no.

Captain Joe Root signals for a review...

...and sure enough, there is a tiny spike on ultra-edge as the ball passes the bat. Toby Roland-Jones gets his man, caught by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

    Brilliant bowling and excellent captaincy.

Better from Toby Roland-Jones, he has dropped his length a little shorter and is angling them towards the right-hand batsman.

The last ball of the session is reviewed, have England got Bavuma caught behind?

Earlier, we mentioned that it's the first time England have seen their number eight top score in both innings of a Test. We got it wrong - Toby Roland-Jones batted at eight in the first innings, as nightwatchman. Our bad!

That was nice. England need to get Hashim Amla out. Get Broad and Anderson in after lunch. If he gets in and is on form then he can bat all day.

    England need eight wickets

Moeen in again and the South Africa pair are sweeping him well, getting forward to the pitch of the delivery and swatting it away to deep square leg.

Superb. Amla rocks back and flicks one away for four towards deep mid-wicket.

The shot of the day. That was class.

"Toby Roland-Jones is bowling too straight," cries Geoffrey on commentary.

Amla drives to mid-on for three and later in the over gets a single to the same area.

    "Yes, no."

Confusion in the running as Bavuma sends Amla back, but an England man cannot gather the ball at the first attempt and Amla is safely back into his ground.

Bavuma got in a right tangle. He was going to pull it, then he changed his mind because it turned a lot.

Here he is, England star Moeen Ali and he gets huge turn from his first delivery. That will give the team's second spinner some confidence.

Both Bavuma and Amla are able to nick a couple of singles each by deploying the sweep.

Ouch. Another use of the broom and Bavuma smacks Dawid Malan on the arm.

A cry for a catch as Malan claims the next delivery, but it comes off Bavuma's leg. Umpire Aleem Dar shakes his head vigorously to say no.

It's nice to know that, even in Test cricket, the universal sign for a captain telling a bowler to get loose is to wave in his direction, then move his shoulders in a circle. Joe Root does so in the direction of Moeen Ali, just like a Sunday 3rd XI skipper would do.
