  1. Eng 55-2published at 14 overs

    Cook 28, Root 9

Joe Root plays and misses at a good delivery from Cummins, the bowler hugging the off stump again, and Root can't resist a tentative little push. The wicketkeeper claps his gloves together and Root responds by getting down to the other end, leaving Cook to block the final two balls.

There have been 11 boundaries so far. That's the problem with West Indies - they bowl far too many loose balls, which eases the pressure off the batsmen.

It's not the easiest to see, I have to say. It's lost some of that early acid pink glow, too. Anyway, that's the drinks break over, and it'll be Miguel Cummins to continue.

    Cook 28, Root 8

Holder is making friends with that channel outside off stump - it's more 10th stump than a testing fourth-stump line and Cook has few problems playing out a maiden. Time for a drink.

You have to get Woakes into Test cricket for the Ashes. And what happens if the opener fails against the West Indies? Who are we going to take to Australia? The cupboard is bare in county cricket. Are you going to pick Haseeb Hameed? He isn't scoring runs and he's out of form.

  7. Eng 54-2published at 12 overs

    Cook 28, Root 8

Root glares at the bottom of his bat as he aims a cover drive at Miguel Cummins and the ball ends up trickling sadly towards point. Cummins then squares Root up and he prods awkwardly forward, the ball taking the outside edge and bouncing just in front of second slip, who makes a fine dive to his right to get a mitt to it. That's a better shot, though, Root camped on the back foot and pushing the ball to the ropes.

Zeb Bowyer: England play a third rate bowling attack and still end up 40-2 with Cook, Root and middle order having to fire. Same old scenario.

Isla Jackson: Can we stop messing about and make Root an opener ... He's in the majority of the time before the 10th over is finished anyway.

  9. Eng 50-2published at 11 overs

Captain Jason Holder has the ball in his hands, rolling up his sleeves and firing down a series of deliveries that hug Cook's off stump. Cook plays at one of them, gets a thick outside edge - and it goes bouncing through where a fourth slip should be and away for four! Actually, on the replay, that wasn't as dangerous a shot as it looked - Cook was up on his toes, meeting the extra bounce that Holder found, and he angled it down and through the gap. Holder rounds off a tidy over with a lovely delivery that cramps Cook up, and the opener thrusts his bat down just in time.

The media and the players are in the same building, sharing a door. As I came out, a harassed-looking Jonny Bairstow came the other way. Keeping gloves on, in the company of coach Bruce French, his practice cut short because he might have to put his batting pads on.

    Cummins 2-1-4-1

A terrible fielding effort from Alzarri Joseph at cover, letting the ball fly through his hands and allowing Joe Root to pick up a sneaky three, has Miguel Cummins shaking his head. Sir Viv Richards is watching on from up in the hospitality suite, sunglasses firmly glued to his face, looking like a guitarist that got lost on his way to a gig. Root has a little flirt at a leg side delivery but he ends up flicking at fresh air, before Cook wanders up the wicket for a word.

If someone can get through these two quickly and put the middle order under a little bit of pressure early, then it could be a different tale to what we expected.

  13. Eng 42-2published at 9 overs

    Cook 23, Root 1

Alastair Cook, meanwhile, carries on as usual, nurdling a delivery off his hip and darting down the wicket for a single. Root then gets beaten by another good ball from Kemar Roach, that luminous pink ball nipping back into Root and striking him in the midriff. The England duo trade singles before Roach spears another wide delivery towards the slip cordon.

  15. Eng 39-2published at 8 overs

Joe Root is in, then. Sometimes I wonder why England don't just start their innings on 30 odd for two and sent Root straight in. It saves an awful lot of waitng around. Root slaps a delivery all along the ground to point, and that'll be a wicket maiden for Miguel Cummins.

Westley lbw Cummins 8 (Eng 39-2)

Ooh, that's out! Westley was going for one of his favourite drives and missed, the ball thudding low into his front pad. It's hitting middle and leg, and Marais Erasmus raises his finger. That's an excellent review from West Indies.

It's one of those 50-50 ones, but because he's been given not out, I'd be surprised if he's gone. It might clip the stump.

There's no bat involved, and it's hit Westley quite low on the pad...

  19. West Indies reviewpublished at 7.3 overs

A change of bowling for West Indies, with right-armer Miguel Cummins on for a stint. His first ball moves some way off the pitch but it's wide - very wide, in fact, and Shane Dowrich has to dive to get the ball as it bounces down by his toes. Cummins adjusts his line and appeals as he thwacks Westley on the pads, but Marais Erasmus shakes his head. Jason Holder likes it, though - we're gonna have a review.
