  1. Eng 39-1published at 7 overs

Kemar Roach continues, with three slips and a gully lurking nearby. He's still pushing the ball across Cook, looking for that away swing, but Cook can't be tempted. He lets successive deliveries go by, keeping his bat well out of the way, and that's a maiden to calm things down.

Stuart Broad reckons a new pink ball is very polished, but after 30 overs, it all comes off, and it's impossible to shine.

  3. Eng 39-1published at 6 overs

    Cook 22, Westley 8

In absolute fairness to Mark Stoneman, that was a corker of a delivery from Roach, and there wasn't an awful lot he could have done about it. Other than cry. But he's made of sterner stuff. Blimey, another four to Alastair Cook, this time from a thick outside edge that goes bursting through the slip cordon and down to the boundary. A single brings Westley on strike, and he capitalises on some width from Alzarri Joseph, punching the ball off the back foot and away for four.

Umair Virk: Sorry Cooky, you can now start the hunt for the 13th opening partner.

Ruth Brooksbank: So, who's next in the queue for England to try as an opener?

David Wallace: Oh my! - Who's next to partner Cook?

  5. Eng 30-1published at 5 overs

Shot! A straight drive from Tom Westley, his elbow high, foot planted down the wicket, and that's four. Kemar Roach taps his chin with his fingers and angles in a delivery that just nips away from Westley's outside edge. This ball is keeping a tad low and Roach is getting plenty of away swing, with the keeper having to move to his left and get his hands down low to collect it. A yorker ends the over, and Westley plonks his bat firmly down on it.

It's been an interesting start. Stoneman will be disappointed, but he will have another go in the second innings. It was a good ball though.

  7. Eng 26-1published at 4 overs

    Cook 17, Westley 0

A bottom-handed shovel from Cook goes racing away across the field yet again for a boundary. There really wasn't much oomph behind that shot from Cook, but it just sped away from the two fielders to reach the ropes. Ooh, there's plenty behind that shot from Cook, a drive that goes fizzing through extra-cover and away for another boundary. And four more! A jabbing cut from Cook picks up another boundary. There's a few messages coming in from people at the ground saying they can't see the ball - if you're there, then let us know what your view is like.

    Roach 2-0-10-1

The pink ball makes a different noise when it hits the stumps. Less of a clunky sound, almost, as that delivery from Roach clattered into the sticks. Here's Tom Westley, and he lets four consecutive deliveries go before having a little tickle at another beauty from Roach that just zips past his forward defensive. That's a wicket maiden, and a very nice one at that.

Great delivery - it swung in and nipped back, just flicking the pads. A good length, probing away. Stoneman will be disappointed. It's not the start he would have wanted.

    Stoneman b Roach 8 (Eng 14-1)

Ah. I wasn't expecting that after that first over. Mark Stoneman has been bowled by a belter of a delivery from Kemar Roach! It nipped back, just flicking the top of Stoneman's pad as he tried to push forward, and it's hit the top of off stump. That's a really clever bit of bowling, actually, using Roach's natural swing and the extra zip the pink ball has to get rid of the newest England opener.

  13. Eng 14-0published at 2 overs

The imposing figure of Alzarri Joseph will take the next over. And it's a much tidier one, right up until he spears one onto off stump, and Alastair Cook pings it away for four. The outfield might be a tad stodgy from the rain but that ball absolutely flew down to the ropes. Joseph responds with a delivery that cramps Cook for room as he tries to cut, and he just about avoids chopping on to his stumps.

  15. Eng 10-0published at 1 overs

    Stoneman 8, Cook 1

That's one way to get off the mark on debut - cover driving for four! Mark Stoneman finally gets a delivery he can hit and he throws his arms into a wide delivery that goes racing away. Kemar Roach, looking as pleased as you'd expect, swings a ball into Stoneman's pads, and he promptly clips that one away for four. Not a bad start, then...

  16. ouch!

    Eng 2-0published at 0.3 overs

The ball is a lucid colour of pink. Think of a pink highlighter and you're not far off. Alastair Cook faces the first ball, and promptly pushes it back down the pitch for a leisurely single. Here's Mark Stoneman to face his first ball - and dearie me, Kemar Roach has sent it straight to second slip! That's a terrible wide. It's slipped out of the hand, pitched and then flown straight to second slip, who looks a tad startled by proceedings and gets smacked in the wrist for his troubles. In fact, that's hurt Kraigg Brathwaite, and he's going off the field for treatment. A quiet start...

Stoneman will be very nervous but he'll be thinking it's his chance and that he will grab it with both hands. I think Stoneman could be the one.

England's merry-go-round of opening batsmen is continuing into this series, with Mark Stoneman the latest man to have a go.

Alastair Cook has had 12 opening partners since Andrew Strauss retired in 2012 - and one of those 12 has written a letter of advice to his predecessors.

Nick Compton has penned an open letter on how to avoid being dropped by England, and you can read it here.
