It's a pity tea has come for Powell. He was starting to get his eye in. You feel, if the rain doesn't come, it is good conditions to bowl in. West Indies have got their hands full.
Powell 5, Hope 7
There we have it, it's time for tea. Kieran Powell shows glimpses of solid defending and leaving to see off the Anderson over.
Runs, wickets and a declaration. That session had it all.
It's dark and gloomy but no rain as yet. I have a weather app which says we may have some light rain during the tea break, then some more heavier stuff towards the end of the day's play. I don't particularly trust it though.

Terrifying on the pitch, delightful off it. Sir Curtly Ambrose signs copies of his book in the club shop. A huge smile, loads of time for everyone who has queued to see him.
Stuart Broad has three slips and Mark Stoneman in at short leg - can we expect some short stuff? A well-taken single from Powell brings Hope on strike. Back-of-a-length bowling from Broad, outside the off stump and the West Indies number three is content in leaving.
One more over until we can have a cuppa.

Winston Place sounds like a fine address. He played three Tests in 1948.

Jamie Grove (Essex, Somerset & Leics 1998-2003)

Powell 3, Hope 7
Anderson getting movement off the turf. You feel the batsmen are using every little bit of concentration they can muster to see this out to tea. A bit too much movement from Anderson, as umpire Marais Erasmus is able to stretch his arms by signalling a wide. It wasn't far off from being wider than the Kemar Roach delivery we saw at the start of yesterday's play.
That is beautiful from Anderson to end the over. Pitched up, angling in and then moving away off the wicket, inches from the edge of Powell's bat. That is what Jimmy does.

I said the Jamaica bobsleigh team were the best-dressed. That was before I met Dad's Army. Pike on the left, there. Stupid boy...
The more replays you see of that dropped chance, the more you think it really should have been taken. Two from the over. Broad looks slightly frustrated as his team-mates give him a pat on the back.

Broad pitched it up, he drove at it - and that was catachable. It wasn't straightforward but you expect those to be taken. Pitch it up!
It's pitched up and Powell edges to gully. Ben Stokes is the man you'd want there... but he spills it! It was going fairly quickly but should have been taken.

If Anderson can pitch it up half a yard, he will get Hope out. He's not getting forward to it. The batsmen want to have sighters. You have to make them play.
Anderson to Powell, the opener holds his bat inside the line as the ball whizzes past the edge of the bat. A single brings Hope on strike and there is another huge shout for lbw. Anderson is very interested, for about five seconds, before realising it was sliding down leg. No conversation about the review needed.

MC Alister: It would be wrong to say the West Indies have no hope here. Actually they have two.
Powell 1, Hope 6
Broad straying down the leg side and Powell is off the mark with a single down to fine leg. The Nottinghamshire bowler goes in short and Hope gets well under.
England are getting this ball to talk with more late movement. I'd say there are about 20 minutes until tea. It's survival mode for West Indies.

It was one of those where your first thought is out but, when you think about it, you're not sure. And if you're not sure, don't use your review.
You have to feel for West Indies as Anderson nearly strikes again. There's a huge lbw shout as Jimmy hits the new batsman Kyle Hope on the pads - it was going down leg.
Hope flicks one off his pads, through mid-wicket, and gets West Indies off the mark with a boundary. Six, and a wicket, from the over.

Pitch the ball up, get the batsman to play forward - that is the ball they don't want. An opening batsman, after fielding for five hours, doesn't want something fullish that they have to play it. You could see in the last over Anderson was getting there.
Brathwaite c Bairstow b Anderson 0 (WI 0-1)
Gone! The worst possible start for West Indies as James Anderson strikes. Brathwaite faced only eight balls. Jimmy bowls fuller with late movement, the opener nicks it.

Matthew Moore: Brian Close? Isn't that a few streets up from Bill Alley?
Andrew Stone: Cricketers who sound like roads? Jonty Rhodes.
Rory Taylor: We've had this one before on here, but I'm a fan of Moeen Alley.
