  1. WI 0-0published at 2 overs

Feisty from Broad! Powell has a flirt with a full delivery which goes through to Bairstow behind the stumps. Broad gently jogs up to the West Indies opener and shares a few words. Perhaps he just wanted to wish him luck for the innings?

Good line, albeit not overly threatening - but even after 12 balls you can see the difference in quality between the two bowling attacks. Another maiden.

It's not going to be easy for the West Indies openers. Anderson will be licking his lips about these conditions. He's on 487 Test wickets - 13 more will take him to 500.

    Eng 514

The Edgbaston crowd in full voice. 'Ohhhh Jimmy, Jimmy ... Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy Anderson,' they sing.

Watchful from Brathwaite as Anderson bowls a decent line outside the off stump. There's some late movement as the ball passes the bat, the batsman playing inside the line. Anderson goes straighter and it's dabbed back towards the bowler. Maiden.

So the West Indies openers will have just under 40 minutes to contend with before the tea break.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell make their way to the middle. Someone has put a penny in the meter as the lights are on. Jimmy Anderson, with pink ball in hand, does some last-minute stretches. Here we go ...

Alastair Cook scored 243. He batted for 583 mins - 17 minutes short of 10 hours - faced 407 balls and hit 33 fours.

It is the fifth highest score against West Indies and the fifth highest at Edgbaston.

It was the right call from Root. They've got plenty on the board. Get the pink ball in the bowlers' hands and make it very difficult for the West Indies batsmen.

A tremendous innings from Alastair Cook. As soon as he got to 15 or 20 yesterday, you could sense from his body language and his concentration that there was a big score. That's what great players do. It was a typical Cook innings.

Cook lbw b Chase 243 (England declare on 514-8)

It was more than close, it was plumb. I don't know how the umpire couldn't give that out? Anyway, doesn't matter. Cook doesn't reach his 250 but will anyone really care? Such a fine innings from the England opener. In further news ....

Joe Root has given the signal - England have declared!

Cook hit on the pads. Given not out, Windies review. I think it will be close.

Miguel Cummins, who has been wayward with his line so far in this Test, returns to the attack. He continues to bowl well wide of Cook's off stump, so much so that Cook has to take a couple of short strides to his left to try and reach for the ball. A sliced single down to a wide third man and Cook is now eight away from his 250.

The tall, bald Chase races through an over and it's a welcome maiden for West Indies.

The rain has stayed away so far. We have some predicted for this evening, though. Will we see an England declaration at the end of this session?

And he's reached his century! Jason Holder that is - the Windies captain has gone to three figures now as Toby Roland-Jones, or TRJ as I may call him to save time, edges it between keeper and first slip for four fortunate runs.

For all you West Indies fans, here are a couple of England dismissals to enjoy.

The last England player to carry their bat was Mike Atherton at Christchurch in 1997. He was 94 not out in a total of 228.

Three wickets lost so far in this session. England have lost their four for 57 runs.

Looking at your tweets from this match, I think nearly every member of this England team has been suggested as a potential opening partner for Alastair Cook! Well, seven of them have already batted with Cooky over the last couple of days. New batsman Toby Roland-Jones is the eighth.

There's no need to rush, really. For me, that's a poor effort on the part of Moeen.

That was a horrible miscue. I'm really not sure about that - whether he's under instruction to get on with it, I don't know. But that's a sad way for a man to get out. It was a poor shot.
