  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 131.4 overs

    Moeen c Brathwaite b Chase 0 (Eng 506-7)

Moeen didn't get going. He takes a couple of strides forward and it's a pretty ugly looking shot if I'm honest. Looking to loft it over the long-on boundary, he chips it straight in the air and is caught in the covers.

England bat deep. And yet there's areas in the top six that still need to be nailed down. They bat a long way down but there's uncertainly still up in the top order.

  3. Eng 505-6published at 131 overs

Local boy Moeen Ali arives and receives a massive cheer from the Edgbaston crowd. England's number one spinner (can I call him that? Am I allowed?) sees off the rest of the over. When he gets going, he is a joy to watch!

The lack of celebration tells a story. The ball was a bit too close for that shot. There's a lot of batting to be done for West Indies.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 130.3 overs

    Bairstow b Holder 18 (Eng 505-6)

Chopped on. A tight line from Jason Holder, Bairstow looks to run it down to third man but instead deflects it onto the stumps. A muted celebration from West Indies.

It's an obvious thing to say but Chase is bowling too short.

  7. Eng 503-5published at 130 overs

    Cook 240, Bairstow 18

Aggers is right, it was a slice of luck, but you make your own luck and Cook responds with two boundaries to bring up the 500 for England. The first is short and wide and guided down to the third man boundary. The second is a cut past slip. The 250 is near for Mr. Cook! His highest score is 294, at this very ground.

Cook is smiling. It's the first real slice of luck he's had in this innings. That could have gone anywhere.

  9. Eng 493-5published at 129 overs

Bairstow punches gently down to mid-off and, courtesy of a misfield, they walk through for an easy single. I said that the Windies fielders must be shattered, spare a thought for Alastair Cook.

Ahhh, Cook top-edges a pull, the bowler Jason Holder is running towards the short mid-wicket region and it falls safe. The Cook tale continues.

Tossed up by Chase, Bairstow makes some room and steers it through the covers for three. West Indies' fielders have done a lot of running. They must be absolutely shattered.

I don't think Jason Holder is utilising his height enough. He and Carlos Brathwaite are big, tall guys but, from my experience with them, they are not as strong a they look. I tried to teach them to hit the pitch harder. If they can utilise their height and get that extra bounce, it makes batsmen a bit more circumspect.

Gavin, I love that. But you need four in that bath (there's a sentence I didn't think I'd be writing today) ... either find yourself one more friend, or a bigger bath.

Jason Holder is huffing and puffing - his body language doesn't set an example for the rest of his team. It isn't the worst of the 127 overs bowled so far, a couple of play-and-misses from Bairstow. A single apiece to the two batsmen.

Full and wide from Roston Chase and it receives the treatment it deserves, Bairstow stretching out his arms and cutting it down to the wide third man boundary for four. Chase strays slightly down leg and Bairstow sweeps to fine leg for two more. This is all too easy for England.

Alastair Cook has only missed one Test for England - he's played 143 in a row.

    Cook 226, Bairstow 3

A good over from Jason Holder. He get's one to jump up on Bairstow, before finding the gap between bat and pad, inches over the middle stump. England's number seven replies with an off-drive for one. Would have been four but it was partially stopped by the fielder at mid-off.

Roston Chase sounds to me like a rather upmarket private road, somewhere nice and posh like Godalming. Are there any other cricketers whose names resemble streets or roads? I'll start the bidding with Brian Close.

Oooh, bounce and a hint of turn from Chase and Cook nearly edges it into the gloves of the keeper. Then a paddle sweep for two more to the Essex man.

I'm trying to think of a time when Cook has been troubled by the West Indies bowlers in this innings. I can't.
