England on top, but West Indies proved on the first three days it's dangerous to underestimate them.

Against a better side, England would have lost this Test match. They would have been bowled out for 150 and West Indies dropped two or three chances in the second innings. Their skipper, tactically, had a poor day too.

England's Moeen Ali: "To have a lead is absolutely gold at the minute. Realistically we were thinking we could get a lead of 180 but to have this lead is fantastic.

"They have bowled well in this game. We felt we had to try and get overs in their legs and counter in the last session and that's what we did.

"We feel like it [Malan's innings] was a fantastic innings. The way he played, he felt like he struggled, but some shots were beautiful. It was a massive knock. Everyone else might get the accolades but it was crucial.

"I felt good just before tea and after me and Woaksey thought we just had to go up in five runs and look at our lead rather than our score. We felt they were tired.

"Attacking was not something I intended today. The situation was one I have been in before and you learn from that experience. I thought what do they not want and it was someone to hit boundaries, play carefree, see ball, hit ball and take the momentum away.

"While I was batting I was thinking I needed more runs to bowl at. Thinking it would be better for the team and for me to bowl at.

"We know they have got a collapse in them."

England's Chris Woakes: "When I went in, we were trying to creep up to a competitive score. I just tried to support Moeen, building the partnerships in fives, and it worked for us. He played some lovely shots and it was nice to watch him from the other end.

"There was a signal from the dressing room one over before we declared to have a dip and then we were called in. We didn't get too much of a heads-up."

My prediction for tomorrow is that England will win and James Anderson will be cracking open a nice bottle of red having become the first Englishman to 500 Test wicket.

West Indies opening pair Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell came through a tricky six-over spell unscathed at 5-0.

That means the tourists require 317 more runs to win, looking to draw on their fine batting performance in the first innings.

But an in-form James Anderson and spin in the pitch for Moeen Ali makes England favourites.

He took that reprieve and ran with it, though, bringing up his 12th Test fifty in style...

A century looked on the cards until he mis-hit Bishoo skywards and was caught in the deep...

But Chris Woakes took up the mantle with a fine 50 of his own to help England declare on 490-8 and set West Indies 322 to win...

Enter Moeen Ali. The prodigious number eight looked in fine fettle...

Albeit was a tad fortunate to have been caught behind off a very tight no ball by Bishoo...

Stokes and Malan took England to 303-4 at drinks in the afternoon session, a lead of 134.

It was all going "swimmingly" as my colleague Matt fatefully typed.

But then madness ensued. First Stokes clipped Chase skywards for catching practice for Brathwaite...

Then Malan played around a decent but not unplayable delivery from Chase and was bowled...

And a Bairstow brain-fade saw the wicketkeeper try to reverse sweep Chase, only to bottom edge it onto his own stumps.

England suddenly in immense trouble at 327-7, leading by just 158.

After the lunch interval, Dawid Malan finally ground his way to a steely half-century off 162 balls, playing a composed, anchor innings in support of his team...

Stokes was going up the gears at the other end...

And the all-rounder added a half-century to his first innings century with a typically powerful back-foot drive through the covers...

But a strange spell before lunch saw the tourists decide against taking the second new ball and Ben Stokes took advantage, plundering runs off spin duo Devendra Bishoo and Roston Chase after a subdued start to his innings...

England reached lunch 251-4, with a lead of 82.

Progress seemed serene for Root - but suddenly he was out again between 70 and 90, guiding a ball too close to cut to Shai Hope at gully off Shannon Gabriel.

The game had swung back Windies' way...

In the morning, with England leading by just two runs and three wickets down, it felt like most of the hosts' hopes rested on captain Joe Root.

Mr Consistency duly brought up his second fifty of the game...

At the other end, Dawid Malan was still grinding away stoically but rode his luck when he was dropped on 32 by Kieran Powell at first slip...

Right, let's take a look back at yet another fascinating day in this second Test, with the help of a few clips...

Moeen Ali might want to bat at five and six, but he summed it up himself when he said in his post-match interview that it was a nice time to bat today with the bowlers tired. That's why you want Moeen at number eight.

England's Moeen Ali: "It was a nice time to go out and bat this afternoon. We counter-attacked a little bit and it came off. We never let them settle. I just tried to build a partnership with Chris Woakes where we scored at five an over.

"Hopefully it'll be overcast tomorrow for the seamers and that helps the spinners too. We want to win in two sessions tomorrow."

Looking towards the winter, England will have been happy to have been under so much pressure and have come through it. Dawid Malan played an unnatural innings - making a four-hour 50 - and that showed mental toughness. I was very impressed.

I can't believe the spinners haven't had more of an impact on this game looking at the pitch. They clearly haven't bowled well enough but I expect Moeen to be England's matchwinner tomorrow.

More runs were scored on day four of this match today than any of the previous days.

A rare occurrence in Test cricket that underlines just how well England's batsmen ground it out and then went on the attack today - summed up by Malan and then Moeen's respective innings.

England have owned the day. Well done to Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes - all of those half-century makers have made sure England, at the very least, will draw this Test.
