  1. Eng 64-2published at 6 overs

    Root 16, Morgan 0

Eoin Morgan joins Joe Root at the crease so we have England's white ball and red ball captains batting together.

That's the end of the powerplay.

England need 113 runs from 84 balls.

That's a big wicket. Alex Hales played exceptionally well and has got England off to the start they wanted. It's a big loss.

    Hales b Brathwaite 43 (Eng 63-1)

Stumps everywhere. Alex Hales tries to go again but for the first time in the innings he fails to connect. The delivery from Brathwaite is on target and that means the bails light up and off stump is uprooted.

Big fist pump from the bowler. His team needed that.

Far too much width from the West Indies captain and Root planted his foot and waited for the ball beautifully. He timed it effortlessly.

  5. Eng 63-1published at 5.2 overs

I don't think Carlos Brathwaite is enjoying this. He bowls down leg and the ball flicks Root's pads and the ball goes for four leg byes.

Now Brathwaite over-corrects and it's too full and too wide. Root takes advantage. Four more!

  6. Eng 55-1published at 5 overs

    Hales 43, Root 11

Without meaning to sound like a grumpy so-and-so, the over-rate at the moment is appalling. West Indies are stopping after every other ball.

Sunil Narine is into the attack. His skiddy spinners that he doesn't try to spin may be tricky on this pitch. He blows on his fingers to try and get some heat onto them to help him grip the ball.

His first over is actually really good but Hales capitalises on a tiny bit of width and thumps the ball for his eighth four off the final ball.

Like Evin Lewis did earlier, Alex Hales is picking the right ball to find the boundary. England are all over the West Indies, they have the momentum and are dominating this innings so far.

That's a really good shot because he had to wait that extra bit longer to get that angle over fine leg.

  9. Eng 50-1published at 4 overs

England need 127 to win from 96 balls

Yep, it seems the West Indians are complaining about losing their footing on the greasy surface but we're going to continue.

That won't help Brathwaite's mood. A long hop and Hales helps himself to four by lifting a pull over short fine leg.

You've got to make do. There's nothing the groundsman can do to dry it out.

I think the West Indies are struggling with their movement out in the field. Ashley Nurse is saying to the umpire that he slipping all over the place.

  12. Eng 46-1published at 3.4 overs

    Hales 35, Root 10

In fairness to West Indies this is about as alien to them as it's possible to be. It's about 10C and a bunch of northerners in fancy dress in the crowd are belting the words to the Proclaimers.

Carlos Brathwaite brings himself into the attack and it's a much better start to the over.

But now the umpires are getting together for a chat. It's not raining. I'm not sure what this is about...

That was an incredible shot from Alex Hales - he just pivoted off the back foot.

  14. Eng 43-1published at 3 overs

    Target 177

Alex Hales is in good nick. He steps away, starting with his bat high and then swinging through the line and crunching four more.

And now six!! Chris who? England have got Alex Hales. He's already waiting for the bouncer and swivels on it putting the ball into the stands. Hales has 35 from 12.

Alex Hales is rocketing along. How big a miss could this be?

Excellent balance from Hales, clipping it off his legs and easing it through backward square-leg. England are flying.

  17. Eng 33-1published at 2.3 overs

Leg stump again from Jerome Taylor and Hales finds the fence.

    Chester-le-Street is rocking.

Look at the West Indies players' body language. All of them have their hands in their pockets.

  19. Eng 28-1published at 2.1 overs

That's rubbish bowling from Taylor. He starts the over on Joe Root's pads and you don't need me to tell you that the Yorkshireman doesn't miss out.

He's so confident hitting through the off side - along the ground and in the air. Great signs for England - Alex Hales is looking in serious form.
