  1. Eng 114-1published at 19 overs

    Target 205

A beauty of a cover drive from Root reduces the target by two. He then works one off the hips and to mid-wicket for a couple more.

These spinners in the middle overs don't look like taking wickets anytime soon. For Windies to get back in this game, you imagine Holder will need to turn to pace.

  3. Not outpublished at 18 overs

Nahhh, he got his foot well back. It was a nice over from Bishoo, a tight and tidy line, conceding just two.

Over in the posh booths, Freddie Flintoff poses for photos. If you haven't already done so, have a listen to this week's Flintoff, Savage and the Ping Pong Guy podcast. It's ace.

Has Bairstow been stumped? Windies don't look overly confident but it's gone upstairs.

  6. Eng 106-1published at 17 overs

    Bairstow 55, Root 30

Ashley Nurse continues as Joe Root plays consecutive paddle-sweeps down to fine leg, bringing up the 100 for the hosts.

Three more singles and that's seven from the over. England need 99 more runs from 25 overs with nine wickets remaining. The West Indies fielders have hands in pockets. They need something special from here.

What a player Jonny Bairstow is. He could etch himself into this side.

  8. 50 runs

50 for Bairstowpublished at 16 overs

    Eng 99-1

Devendra Bishoo is getting a bit of turn, but nothing to worry this settled England pair. Root and Bairstow easily finding the gaps as the England opener brings up his 50 with a late cut, past the diving man at backward point for four. A fine innings, he has gone about his business nicely. 51 from 53 balls.

    Thanks, Mark.

You're right, England are in cruise control. They're also driving an automatic. They may soon move over to the fast lane. We shall see.

  10. Eng 94-1published at 15 overs

    Target 205 (42 overs)

The Old Trafford crowd are getting a little feisty, helped no doubt by an afternoon and evening's drinking. England, momentarily becalmed, just pick up two singles from the over.

And with England well on the way to what should be a straightforward victory (famous last words), I entrust you into the care of Kal Sajad for the rest of the game.

That was a beautiful slog-sweep but in no way was it a filthy hack. Root got right to the pitch, a lovely shot.

  12. Eng 92-1published at 14 overs

    Bairstow 46, Root 27

Bishoo spins the ball from hand to hand, he still has "Universe Boss" Gayle stationed as a largely immobile slip, but there's nothing West Indies can do when Root gets down and expertly slog-sweeps him towards cow corner from outside off stump. (I played in a game on Sunday where there were some cows in the next field, sadly they were at deep square leg rather than actual cow corner). England on cruise control, and there's nothing West Indies can do about it.

It almost looks like a different wicket. Even the sound of the ball coming off the bat - whether they're timing it better than West Indies did or the pitch has changed.

  14. Eng 84-1published at 13 overs

    Target 205 (42 overs)

Nurse, who's reasonably stocky, belatedly finds a bit of turn as Bairstow is discomforted by one which turns into his pads but was going down the leg side. Three singles from the over - so it's West Indies' best of the innings.

England have scored six runs or more in 11 of the 12 overs so far, and five in the other over.

  16. Eng 81-1published at 12 overs

    Bairstow 41, Root 21

With the sun setting (literally) on Old Trafford and (metaphorically) on West Indies' hopes of automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup on these shores, Bairstow and Root have quietly forged their way to a fifty stand, both rattling along at about a run-a-ball or better. Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo into the attack, but he's milked for singles and twos as easily as his team-mates.

  18. Eng 76-1published at 11 overs

    Target 205 (42 overs)

Root gets down well to reverse-ramp Nurse for four, while an orthodox sweep brings him a single. Seven from the over, and this may be one of those days where the fielding captain finds his bowlers are trying to avoid catching his eye.

  20. Eng 69-1published at 10 overs

    Bairstow 36 (30 balls), Root 14 (16)

With the opening powerplay lasting only nine overs (because we're in a truncated, 42-over ODI), West Indies can at least post some more boundary fielders - but the dilemma for captain Holder in setting his fields is that with the scoring rate England are going at, the Windies may have to bowl England out to win the match. So he can't be too defensive as this pair will just pick up singles at will. Which they do this over - six of them.
