Is it really 10 years since Yuvraj Singh smacked Stuart Broad for six sixes in the inaugural World T20 in South Africa? Yep.

    Target 205 (42 overs)

A double change as it's Barbados off-spinner Ashley Nurse into the attack. His run-up is not unlike that of Shane Warne - in other words, he walks in two or three paces before breaking into a trot just before his delivery stride. The sort of bowler who, if he went in the fetlock, would probably be just as effective bowling from a standing start.

It's business as usual for England as Bairstow and Root help themselves to three singles, while Bairstow punches another four through the covers. No alarms for England, who can play risk-free cricket.

Rarely do you see a bowler apologise to nearly everyone on his team, as Williams said sorry for getting his line wrong.

    Bairstow 27, Root 10

West Indies make their first bowling change - it's Kesrick Williams, a right-arm seamer from St Vincent and the Grenadines, but it's business as usual for England as Williams strays down the leg side and Bairstow carefully glances it away for four. That's fifty up for England, already.

As a man who likes to stand (as he is at the moment) at first slip with his hands in his pockets, I'd imagine Chris Gayle would be a big supporter if ODI cricket adopted the "designated hitter" rule used in American League baseball. Basically, it allows teams to employ a big biffer who doesn't have to field...

They look sharp between the wickets. They have taken a risk or two, but it's almost as if they are trying to make a point to West Indies about how you play the modern game.

Still Taylor for now, the Jamaican sporting a little pointy goatee these days. He's not had too much luck with bouncers today, a head-high one to Root is helped away for four to long leg by the Test skipper who seems happy to be back in the ranks in the white-ball stuff. Some ones and twos make it another profitable over for the hosts.

That's why Hales is not a Test match player. He just cannot build a score when the opportunity is there.

This is a an opportunity for Bairstow. He's never let England down in white-ball cricket but he's never established himself in the team. It's the first time he has been in the side and can establish himself in a particular position. He has been given a role and he could be in that role for a long period of time.

    Bairstow 15, Root 4

Rovman Powell gets down well to restrict Root to a single. I notice he just has "Powell" on the back of his shirt with no extra initial, perhaps the kit man's not expecting namesake Kieran Powell to add to his 39 ODI caps any time soon? Bairstow and Root are, as ever, speedy between the wickets - perhaps they're just the men to take advantage of the occasionally languid Windies fielding. Bairstow rotates the strike well with a nice little tickle to third man.

You feel that West Indies are about 30/35 runs light in this match.

Joe Root in at three, getting about as warm a reception in Manchester as any Yorkshire player has ever had. He's certainly wrapped up, with a sleeveless sweater (well, not a sweater, one of those ODI slipovers) on top of a long-sleeved shirt. He's off the mark with a single.

A simple chance. It was a little bit too close to his body for him to play the cut shot. If it was a yard wider he could have climbed into it. He just couldn't get the elevation.

    Hales c Lewis b Taylor 19 (Eng 31-1)

Having drilled his fourth four back past the bowler, Alex Hales' cameo of 19 from 14 balls ends as he tries to force Taylor through the off side and gifts a simple catch to Evin Lewis at backward point.

Whether that inspires you to drop Hales from "your" Test team, you can do that here...

Here's that comedy fielding moment from Jason Mohammed, which is better seen than described...

  16. Eng 27-0published at 4 overs

With the required rate under five an over, England are motoring along at seven so far. Holder, bowling from the James Anderson End, is hoisted over mid-on for four by Bairstow, who takes his bottom hand off the bat as he goes through with the shot.

And if Alex Hales' ODI form persuades you that he's worth another go in the Test format, you can pick your England Ashes XI and share it with your friends.

Too short from Jerome Taylor. It's not throat height, it's waist height. If Taylor wants to bowl that then he needs to really bang it in.

  18. Eng 21-0published at 3 overs

    Target 205 (42 overs)

As Charles Dagnall on TMS "goes full Partridge" (his words) in his praise of the new A556 bypass which links the M6 and M56, Hales is still batting in the fast lane as he waits for a bouncer from Taylor and savagely clubs it for a first-bounce four to mid-wicket. Rovman Powell, newly assigned to guard that boundary, will have a busy evening here as Hales punches two more to that same area before allowing himself an Alec Stewart-style bat-twirl.

That's a tremendous stroke. There was a little bit of shape but he didn't try to hit it too hard and timed it perfectly.

  20. Eng 15-0published at 2 overs

    Bairstow 7, Hales 8

Skipper Jason Holder takes the second over, he's not as quick as Taylor. I've just noticed the Windies have two stars above the badge on their shirt - presumably to mark their World Cup wins in 1975 and 1979. Bairstow picks up a two and threads a drive for four through the covers,

Meanwhile, the inscrutable "Universe Boss" Chris Gayle stands statuesque at first slip, where you sense he'll try to stay for most of the remaining 40 overs. Although I get the feeling that this game may not go the full distance...
