Ben Stokes, like Moeen Ali, clearly has a plan in mind for Chris Gayle. Low, skiddy and wide of off stump. It's working for now.

James Bridges: Does a high velocity object moving through turbulent air flow created by a rapidly moving imperfect sphere create a sound wave?

Victor Antony: Hope Root doesn't moan when he gets overturned in Samuels fashion down under.

The ice creams are being enjoyed in the stands. It's September, but us Brits are still hanging on to summer. Who's having a barbecue tonight?

Here's that talking point. Did he edge it? UltraEdge says he did... but there's daylight between bat and ball, isn't there?

  5. WI 117-3published at 18 overs

    Gayle 66, Mohammed 3

Liam Plunkett is getting the ball to beat the outside edge with some nice away swing. Can he nail the one which nips back? Yes, he can... but Jason Mohammed is up to the challenge.

Paul Hilferty: Everyone in agreement that he probably didn't hit that?

Scott Hughes: In the case of that Samuels "edge", why is hotspot no longer used in these situations?

Moeen Ali is almost bowling round-arm to Chris Gayle, from round the wicket. The big man is kept in check as we head for drinks.

Danny Williams: Gotta feel for Marlon Samuels. On seeing the replays, very few people in the ground thought that was out.

Vince Kenny: Oh Marlon. Perhaps if you reviewed your treatment of fellow cricketers they'd stop reviewing you?

I thought there was a gap between the ball and the bat. I was speaking to some of the England players once and they were indicating the squiggle could be the studs scraping the ground at the same time. Samuels' back leg did do that.

Liam Plunkett looked sympathetic when Marlon Samuels trudged off there. Did Marlon Samuels throw the bat so hard at that ball, the swish of the bat was the reason for the slight noise?

I am not sure Plunkett was convinced. To be fair, Root at slip went up immediately but I don't think Buttler was convinced either.

    Samuels c Buttler b Plunkett (WI 109-3)

The tiniest flicker of sound does for Marlon Samuels, who almost threw himself off his feet trying to hit that. It feels harsh - "that noise could have been anything," remarks the man opposite me - but Marlon is asked to leave the crease. Shaking his head as he goes.

  13. England reviewpublished at 15.3 overs

A murmur of an appeal from Liam Plunkett when Marlon Samuels misses with a big shot and the ball is taken by the keeper. The men behind the bat appeal. Not out... we're off to a review.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Chris Gayle has hit 244 one-day-international sixes. He is third in the all-time list. Second is Sanath Jayasuriya with 270 and Shahid Afridi is top with 351.

  15. WI 104-2published at 15 overs

Moeen Ali mixes his angle of delivery as he tries to rein in Chris Gayle, in particular. A lofted shot down the ground drops between two fielders as the big man's luck continues. I'm reliably informed the record for the number of sixes in an ODI in England is 27. We're up to 20 today - and Gayle's still in!

    Watch and admire.

  17. WI 100-2published at 14 overs

    Gayle 59, Samuels 6

Marlon Samuels is off the mark in unusual circumstances, with a five. That's because the ball runs for four overthrows while Marlon ambles through for a single. He would have been out if Liam Plunkett's throw had hit. Chris and Marlon won't be going for many quick singles, you sense.

The people have seen some astonishing hitting from Moeen Ali already today and inevitably there is a positive response from West Indies. Whilst Gayle is there, who knows what will happen?

  20. WI 92-2published at 13 overs

    Target 370

The West Indies have two stars above their crest, signifying their two World Cup wins in this format (in 1975 and 1979). Good news on the weather front, by the way, as it looks to have given Bristol a swerve. Let's play this game to a finish!
