There's some real intent being shown by West Indies. It looks like they are trying to win it in 30 overs rather than set a platform.

Shai Hope is the opposite of Chris Gayle. And not just because he's shorter and right-handed.

He's more subtle in his shot selection - driving a delightful four through the covers.

    Ian Bell-esque.

I have bowled at Gayle a few times, especially in the West Indies, where it has been very difficult. You have to stick your chest out and be a bit extra with your bravado. Anything too full, his eyes light up.

    Gayle 11, S Hope 0

One Chris shows he has the measure of another Chris.

Woakes bowls a slower ball and Gayle whacks it over mid-off for four. Then gestures with his wrist to show he read the bowler.

Next ball... six into the leg side.

He's not going to be here for a long time. But it will as sure as hell be a good time.

It's not quite there for the pull shot. That was a shorter delivery, you'd have to question what he is trying to do there. He had 12 from the over already, there was no need to force it. A gift for England. That's the sort of ball he could have tucked into the leg side for one and to get Chris Gayle on strike. I'm not sure how sensible that shot was.

    Well, that didn't last long!

Evin Lewis goes for one big, muscular shot too many and mis-times a pull shot to Moeen Ali at mid-on.

  7. WI 15-0published at 1.4 overs

David Willey shares the new-ball duties and is instantly belted for six over mid-wicket by Evin Lewis. And again, this time it's a bit more aerial and a bit straighter. The result is the same though. More muscle than a seafood restaurant's specials menu.

Lewis is hopping around and I think he has just twisted his ankle. His studs might have got caught in the crease.

We're just three balls into the West Indies innings and Chris Gayle has already almost run himself out. Not that he looks bothered. These things happen to us all. Even the Universe Boss. Right?

Just two singles from Chris Woakes' opening over.

    Thanks Stephan.

Are we set up for some early autumnal fireworks from Mr Gayle and Mr Lewis? Or will the Windies fizzle out like a cheap sparkler. Let's find out.

Right then, that interval was quicker than a hiccup. The players are back out there. Here's Marc Higginson.

I'd like to see Liam Plunkett running in. He's not really been mentioned but let him run in and bowl fast.

I will throw this out there, it maybe should have happened this summer, but Ben Foakes to come in at number eight. I haven't seen a great deal of his keeping but I heard he is the best wicketkeeper in county cricket. We need good catchers and I think if Jonny Bairstow was in the outfield, I think he would bring a great deal of energy. He could be the number three slip. I don't think they will go with that but that's how it will end up during the series.

We make too much about the batting order. Having the best player at three is an old-fashioned view from a time when you only batted down to number seven.

I want Jonny Bairstow at four. I think he's brilliant. He's the best player we have, aside from Joe Root.

I think somebody who has not been mentioned and who could bat at three is James Vince. If somebody bowls a half-volley, he'll put it away. I worry about Keaton Jennings' mindset. He's had such a tough summer.

  18. Postpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 24 September 2017

Michael Vaughan has just shouted James Vince to bat at number three. So left-field, he wasn't an option in our selector...

England need to find a three and not move Joe Root up to three. Australia will want him at three - they'll want England's two best batsmen, Root and Cook, exposed to the new ball as early as possible.

Joe Root needs to get up the order to three. England need somebody scoring heavily in their top three, like Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook have done in recent years.
