  1. 'He'll be frustrated'published at 16:36 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    Ebony Rainford-Brent
Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

Did Sabbir take some pace off that? Hales got there far too early and that's why he hit it so square. You could see why he was eyeing that up, there was plenty of space to hit the boundary over the top.

He'll be frustrated not to reach 100 but you have to say well batted.

  2. wicket

    WICKET - Eng 165-2published at 28 overs

Hales c sub (Sunzamul Islam) b Sabbir 95

    Ahhh he'll be gutted.

He wanted to reach triple figures in style.

He goes for a slog-sweep but doesn't connect as he wished. The sub fielder at deep midwicket held on.

Disappointing but a great innings nevertheless.

  3. Eng 165-1 (Hales 95, Root 66)published at 27.5 overs

England need 306 runs to win

    FOUR!

    SIX!

Hales means business as a new bowler into the attack, Sabbir Rahman with his leg-breaks.

The first a short ball which Hales drags from the offside through to four. Then the second is massive, shimmy down the wicket, over the boundary rope for six. 100 is near.

  4. 'Time for subs in cricket?'published at 16:33 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    Simon Mann
    BBC Test Match Special commentator

Why don't we have substitutes in cricket? Every other sport does. In the Roses match recently Jimmy Anderson was injured after half an hour, clearly out of the game, and he couldn't continue.

Chris Woakes is injured after two overs today and is out.

  5. Eng 152-1 (Hales 84, Root 64)published at 16:31 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

England need 306 runs to win

Mustafizur continues, Hales with step to the right to get in line of the ball and with a big swing hits over to the leg side for a couple.

The 150 is up, the fastest 50 of England's innings so far.

Root looks okay for the moment, although his injury wasn't really tested in that over.

  6. 'Dilemma for Root'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC Test Match Special

It's crazy and unkind that players are not allowed a runner. Here's Joe Root, at the start of the tournament, and he's hurt his hamstring. Does he go off and say he can't risk it getting worse? Or does he carry on going and risk putting himself out for the tournament. It's a real dilemma.

  7. Postpublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

Root's having a long chat with the physio as he glugs down some drinks. TV replays show he may have twisted an ankle.

The physio is off and we continue, Root stays ... for now.

  8. Eng 147-1 (Hales 81, Root 62)published at 26 overs

England need 306 runs to win

Root pulls one to deep square leg, for a moment it looks like it will find the fielder but falls safe.

Oh hold up, what's this? It looks like he has injured himself somehow whilst playing that shot.

Is it the hamstring? He's doing some stretches. Worrying sign for England.

Hales, down on one knee, whacks the final ball of the over down to long off for four.

But back to Root, the physio is on.

  9. Watch: 50 for Rootpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

Roooooooooooooot! A half century for the Yorkshireman, showing why he is in the top 5 ODI batsmen in the world.

  10. Eng 138-1 (Hales 76, Root 58)published at 25 overs

England need 306 runs to win

England need 168 from 150 balls. It's walking pace stuff for them, and maybe complacency is the only real worry. Alex Hales played a few ugly shots in the last over as he looked to speed things along somewhat.

The TVs' 'win predictor' says Bangladesh have a 77% chance of winning from here. Do they want to make it a bet?!

    Halfway point.

  11. Watch: Alex Hales with a straight sixpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

Alex Hales with a contemptuous shot, skipping down to knock Shakib Al Hasan in to the stands.

Steve Lawley: Leave Jason Roy alone. Secret weapon, once opposition get him out they think they have won.

Alex Dann: Roy is probably in the side because he averaged 50 last year. Same people probably called for Hales & Woakes to be dropped too.

Angus McPhail: I do agree that it might be time for Roy to be dropped, but he's out of form, not all of a sudden complete rubbish.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Alex Hales and Joe Root average 72 when batting together, which is bettered only by South Africa's Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers.

  14. Eng 135-1 (Hales 75, Root 56)published at 24 overs

England need 306 runs to win

Chance! Alex Hales calls a swift single and he has to slide in - no, well judged! He was clearly home before the ball flashed past the stumps.

Hales then pulls out of an attempted hook, he wants a wide for that bouncer, it was high!

    Athar Ali Khan
Former Bangladesh all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

It's difficult for the batsmen to pick up Mustafizur's cutters because he bowls it with the same action.

  16. Eng 133-1 (Hales 74, Root 55)published at 23 overs

21-year-old Mustafizur Rahman is certainly one to watch. Every ball is a test.

  17. Postpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    Athar Ali Khan
Former Bangladesh all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

England look in a good position but things can change very quickly. Bangladesh need to find a go-to bowler. They need to find someone to break this partnership. At the moment both batsman look solid and look to play shots.

  18. 50 runs

    Eng 130-1 (Hales 73, Root 53)published at 22.3 overs

Joe Root moved to 50 on the last ball of the last over, he's made it look all so straightforward. Can he and Alex Hales both pick up centuries here?

You can't see either of them getting out at the moment.

Hang on though - this Mustafizur Rahman is causing trouble! He teases a leading edge again from Hales and again it flies safe.

Martin Randall: Just leaving work. Will put TMS on for drive home. Cue collapse.

That's a strike that, he properly connected. Not too many people would hit near the dressing room.
