This is the seventh hundred partnership between Amla and Du Plessis in ODIs. They average 57, the second best for South Africa behind Amla and De Villiers.

  2. SA 151-1published at 28 overs

    Amla 71, Du Plessis 52

Hashim Amla always strikes me as somebody who you'd hate to play street cricket against. You'd never get him out and he'd manoevre your bowling nicely between neighbours' vehicles and pot holes. He's scoring at a run-a-ball as he passes 70. Scoring runs for him is easy.

  3. 50 runs

50 for Faf Du Plessispublished at 27.1 overs

    SA 146-1

Faf brings up his half-century with a single. It's come at almost a run-a-ball and the energy he naturally brings to the crease is simmering towards a crescendo, one suspects. Here's one of his best bits so far...

  4. Watch Amla go bigpublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 3 June 2017

Of that 100 partnership, Hashim Amla has scored the fastest - scoring 50 in 38 balls. Including this maximum.

  5. SA 145-1 (Amla 68, Du Plessis 49)published at 27 overs

There's a general perception within South African cricket that Faf Du Plessis is the best captain in the team. He's in charge of the Test side, but not the ODI lot (AB de Villiers is). He welcomes Suranga Lakmal back to the bowling attack with a pull shot for four. It's an over full of short stuff, and Hashim Amla is slightly relieved that his swivel shot lands safely in front of deep square leg. The 100 partnership is up in 90 balls.

  6. How's stat?!published at 12:32 British Summer Time 3 June 2017

This is Hashim Amla's third half-century in four innings.

  7. Postpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 3 June 2017

As Alison Mitchell noted on TMS earlier, South Africa clearly prefer the extra pace on this pitch so they can clip the ball to the boundary.

  8. SA 135-1published at 26 overs

    Amla 67, Du Plessis 40

Hashim Amla likes it here: he scored 311 not out at The Oval in 2012. What an epic knock that was!

He and Faf Du Plessis are playing a bit like it's 2012 at the moment - using the middle overs to milk the spinners and pile up the singles. AB waits patiently on the players' balcony. Six from the over.

Thanks Stephan. Everyone well? The South African batting onslaught stands between me and an 80s movies fancy dress party tonight. I'm going as Elliott from ET - red hoodie, milk bottle crate strapped to my waist, the little fella wrapped in a blanket in the front. Job's a good un'.

  10. SA 130-1published at 25 overs

The bounce of Lasith Malinga's hair as he runs to the crease is almost hypnotic. Like the jiggling of Homer Simpson's stomach. Only singles, which Sri Lanka will see as a small win, but there's no pressure. Marc Higginson is here to talk you through what is likely to be a South African onslaught...

  12. 6 runs

    SA 119-1published at 24 overs

    Amla 63, Du Plessis 35

Even the whippy leg-breaks of Seekkuge Prasanna are starting to look expensive - at least a boundary an over. Du Plesiss has shown he likes a sweep and does so again, fetching the ball in front of square on the leg side for four. After that, Amla dances to loft over deep mid-wicket for his second six. 11 from the over. Control has gone.

South Africa are still able to score at seven or eight an over, despite not scoring boundaries. It shows how they are keeping things moving and compiling runs.

  14. SA 114-1published at 23 overs

44 runs from past 5 overs

Sri Lanka need a wicket, so they call on Lasith Malinga - at least when he's bowling there's no chance of him dropping a catch on the boundary. However, the extra pace allows Amla to work off his pads for a boundary. That tight start is starting to seem a long time ago for the Lankans. South Africa are poised to wallop.

It's not been an explosive knock but he's set up a platform.

Amla looks settled, he looks like he's strapped in for the day.

  17. 50 runs

50 for Hashim Amlapublished at 22 overs

    SA 106-1

The man is a machine. You don't even notice that he's scoring runs. A surgeon, not a butcher. A half-century for Hashim Amla in 56 deliveries.

  18. SA 105-1published at 21.5 overs

Here's that Malinga drop of Du Plessis. It's a shocker. See if you can recreate it with a balled up pair of socks. It's quite tricky not to get a hand on the ball. Misfield at point, Amla cuts for four. He's on 49...

  19. Pakistan bowlers being put through their pacespublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 3 June 2017

  20. SA 97-1published at 21 overs

    Amla 41, Du Plessis 28

Definitely more intent from South Africa now, running hard and toying with the field. Lasith Malinga is having a torrid time - not least because his sun hat keeps detaching itself from his mop of curls. The 50 partnership comes in pretty much even time. Proteas prowling.
