I think 300 is still on, but South Africa are drifting at the moment. I thought they'd have gone a little harder to try and get 350.

South Africa are just tickling the gas, with Du Plessis sweeping the otherwise tidy Prasanna for four. The run-rate is above four for the first time. Around The Oval, plenty of balconies are filled in flats outside the ground. I reckon it's the best venue for watching cricket when you're not actually inside...

Poor old Pradeep made the chance, it was dropped, and now his captain has taken him off.
Amla 36, Du Plessis 18
Really? The Oval was rocking the other day for the England-Bangladesh game. Asela Gunaratne is back with his off-cutters. Still round the wicket, short, stocky. Some of the strangest bowling I've seen in international cricket. Sixer! Width to Amla, who belts over long-off for the first maximum.

Francis Edwards: Atmospheres are terrible at these games. England really hosting World Cup? Just let India/Australia do it, really bad.
Amla 26, Du Plessis 17
You can't help but feel that one will be costly, especially as Du Plessis has looked so energetic since arriving at the crease. He whacks his bat on the ground as he waits for Prasanna. Nice over from the leggie, though. Only three from it.

Sri Lanka had done all the hard work and it will deflate them as a fielding side. They'd been working towards that for 20 minutes.
SA 67-1
This is an absolute goober. Lasith Malinga has failed to lay a hand on a skier on fine leg, swirling around like a man who has been hypnotised. Top edge from Faf du Plessis, Malinga underneath it. At first he takes a step off the field, then back on, then throws himself forward. Doesn't even get a hand on the ball. Du Plessis ends the over with a boundary, too.
Amla 24, Du Plessis 8
Seekkuge Prasanna doesn't believe in a long approach to the crease. Two steps, then fizz it down. He actually travels further in his follow through than he does to get to the crease. Nice drift, hint of turn, Amla lucky that an inside edge doesn't hit the stumps. Du Plessis must be annoying to field against - he can find a single at a mass wedding.

Still Pradeep, who apparently reaches a top speed of 25 km/h in his run-up. Du Plessis, the new arrival, is busy, tickling off his pads and scampering a couple. The brass band is still playing. Do they ever run out of puff?
Also in the drinks break, you can watch the only wicket to have fallen so far today...
The players are taking drinks, by the way, which gives me time to tell you that we've had a text supporting Ross' wish to abandon the get involved. So yes, someone has got involved after Ross got involved to ask us to axe the get involved. It's like Inception.

I always wanted to post a big total first against the Asian teams because often they'd bat first, get a big total, and then squeeze you in the middle overs with their spinners.
Amla 22, Du Plessis 2
This is what we came to see, some spin. Seekkuge Prasanna's leggies, probably on now because there are two right-handers at the crease. Hardly a run-up, slip in place, no real sign of turn just yet. When Prasanna serves up a short, wide pie, Amla cuts only the fourth boundary of the day.

There's no express pace in the Sri Lanka line-up, so what they've done is realised their limitations. Quinton de Kock was reined in by very tidy bowling.
Pradeep 3-0-9-1
Looking again, De Kock was almost trying to work a delivery from outside the off stump through the leg side. Not a great shot. Faf du Plessis is the new man - he got a long long talking to from Hashim Amla when he arrived. Du Plessis is away with a single, but that's the only run from Pradeep's successful over.
Phil Tufnell
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
Good delivery, and just rewards for decent bowling. Sri Lanka have not allowed South Africa to get away. It was a nothing shot from De Kock. It was a meek defensive shot and it found the outside edge.
De Kock c Dickwella b Pradeep 23 (SA 44-1)
The breakthrough! Sri Lanka get what their bowling deserves and a strangely subdued Quinton de Kock is on his way back. It's quick from Nuwan Pradeep - 87mph - with De Kock playing across one that is going away on the angle. Edged, well taken by keeper Niroshan Dickwella.

Asela Gunaratne played a lot of cricket for the army before coming through - he served as a bombardier.
