  1. SA 44-0published at 12 overs

    Amla 18, De Kock 23

Asela Gunaratne into the attack, bowling some medium-pace all sorts. In fact, he's almost sending down loopy off-breaks, all with keeper Niroshan Dickwella standing up. It's the sort of bowling you'll see up and down the county in club cricket today. He's even round the wicket to right-hander Amla. You can't beat some Sri Lankan unorthodoxy.

Pradeep started well, continued to build pressure but he took a risk by bowling two fuller balls and De Kock cashed in. He should have changed his pace up and let De Kock take the risk.

  3. SA 39-0published at 11 overs

For all this pressure, though, Sri Lanka are yet to take a wicket. When South Africa still have Du Plessis, De Villiers, Miller and Morris in the hutch, they know they can catch up. That's nice from De Kock, clipping Pradeep off his pads to the leg-side fence.

South Africa need to be more ruthless. Amla, De Kock, Du Plessis and De Villiers need to step up with big scores.

  5. SA 32-0published at 10 overs

    Amla 17, De Kock 12

Sri Lanka have adapted well to conditions that are on the subcontinental side. No slips, lots of men in front of square, strong ring, straight bowling, tight fielding. Finally, finally, Amla hits his first boundary from the 28th ball he's faced. Some rubber wrists take it up and over mid-wicket for four.

I was talking to Alec Stewart the other day, and they've relaid some pitches here at The Oval. The hope is that soon they'll return to the quick, bouncy pitches of old.

  7. SA 28-0published at 9 overs

    Amla 13, De Kock 12

Nuwan Pradeep, all stubble and mullet, is in to the attack as the brass band continues to toot. The ball hasn't swung, but the lack of pace is certainly hampering strokeplay. Lots of mis-timed strokes. Not likely to be a runfest. Will chasing be tricky too? Even this earlier boundary from De Kock was on the iffy side.

This pitch will get better to bat on, but it won't be as good as the one for England v Bangladesh. I didn't have chance to have a walk down the track today though - (match referee) David Boon was close by. I didn't want to get into trouble with the keg on legs (as Warnie called him the other day).

Magnificent sights in cricket: The MCG, Michael Vaughan's cover drive, Hashim Amla's beard. It's regal, majestic and full of authority. It's the on-drive of beards, whereas the scruffy facial hair of a Ben Stokes is definitely a slog sweep. Still only singles. It's like cricketing Tinder.

Finally South Africa find the rope, even if De Kock's drive off Malinga is less convincing than Sweeney Todd's defence lawyer. Malinga is pretty much bowling off-breaks here. When someone bowls so many slower balls, can we keep calling it a slower ball? I mean, does the slower ball become the stock ball and anything else is a quicker ball? I'm confusing myself...

De Kock hasn't looked himself today. Maybe he's not found his rhythm yet.

  12. SA 18-0published at 6 overs

    Amla 9, De Kock 6

Allan Donald sits with the Sri Lanka staff. Sunhat, shades, gum. He still looks absolutely terrifying. Amla takes Lakmal for a couple off his pads, but De Kock is still struggling to pierce the tight Sri Lanka ring. Is the pitch a touch sluggish? This is ODI cricket from the 1990s.

The challenge for Sri Lanka is that they will struggle to maintain the pressure once their first and second change bowlers come on. South Africa know they can wait and there's a stream of 80mph bowling to come.

  14. SA 12-0published at 5 overs

Plenty of Sri Lanka flags in the crowd. Malinga has already dispensed with the slips and is mixing his pace. More dots than Morse code, pressure building on this experienced pair. Only a single from the over. Good cricket, this. Not really what we were expecting, either.

Ross, I'll think you'll find I play village cricket - you don't get more expert than that.

Morning Ross... And I want a pay rise. Neither of which are likely to happen... :)

Sri Lanka have started well with the ball, all to the soundtrack of a brass band. Can't beat some oom-pah-pahing. Jonathan Agnew used to play the tuba, you know. Only singles for South Africa. Tight start. Meanwhile, the backlash has begun...

You shouldn't lose a review if it's so close and umpire's call, like that.

Once the ball hits the top part of the pad, you're struggling. But it was a good call from Sri Lanka.

You know what? It wasn't a bad shout. Trimming the bails, but not enough ball hitting the timbers. Umpire's call. The conversation between the third umpire and the field umps was relayed to the whole crowd, too. It was like listening to an overlord...
