South Africa are keeping the strike rotated and things ticking, even though the boundaries are hard to come by.

So, just so I've got this straight, you've got involved to tell us to axe the get involved? Malinga, carrying more timber than his earlier days (who isn't?), is round the wicket to De Kock. It's quiet, the silence punctured by a plane flying overhead. South Africa have won their past seven ODIs against Sri Lanka.

  5. SA 6-0published at 2 overs

Suranga Lakmal, spiky haired, takes the other new ball in front of an Oval that is about a third full. The sun is beating down through some fluffy clouds. Lovely morning for cricket. And batting. Amla clips a half-volley off his pads for three. Shot.

If Imran Tahir takes a wicket, remind the groundsman to shut the gates or he'll run out of them.

  7. SA 3-0published at 1 over

Malinga's curls bounce in, leggy to both the right-handed Amla and leftie De Kock. When Amla tickles one through square leg, we get a glimpse of the incredibly sculpted facial hair of umpire Aleem Dar. He reminds me of a young Wes Borland, the fella who plays guitar for Limp Bizkit. Cricket and nu-metal go hand in hand. Linkin Park go to Lord's whenever they are in the UK.

The contest between these two teams wasn't even semi-close earlier this year in South Africa. The Proteas won 5-0, each game by a huge margin.

I'm with Tuffers on that one. South Africa could go big. Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla are opening the batting. Lasith Malinga, the best hair in world cricket, has the ball.

The Sri Lanka bowling line-up doesn't have enough to hold South Africa off. They could get going very easily on this pitch.

The Sri Lanka anthem started about five minutes ago. It's just finished in the south London sunshine. A nice subplot is that Proteas legend Allan Donald is the Lanka fast bowling coach.

South Africa captain AB de Villiers: "We would have bowled first. We come into the game with a lot of confidence and we're excited to get going. It's been a long wait - we've been in England for a while. We've gone with Morne Morkel for today. We know what he can do on wickets like this. We have a balanced side, we bat down to number 10."

Sri Lanka captain Upul Tharanga: "Hopefully (regular skipper) Angelo Mathews will be ready for the next game, we didn't want to take the risk. It's nice to come back into the team, have the leadership and it's nice they have faith in me.

It's going to be like this a lot, isn't it? Upul Tharanga, the stand-in skipper, wins the flick and opts to chase. AB de Villiers says he wanted to bowl too.
