A superb diving from Stokes, ending up posed on the floor like a cat, cuts off a crunching straight drive from Taylor. He eventually gets off the mark to his eighth delivery, a simple little clip off his pads. A good over from Stokes, though - New Zealand are just struggling to find that rhythm again.

That's a horrible ball, an unsettler. Even when the bowling is Plunkett's pace, you don't expect that.
Target 311
A shake of a head and a punch of the glove with Taylor, and Williamson settles back over his mark. There's no let up from Plunkett, and this time it's Taylor who takes one on the grille. That came from absolutely nowhere, the ball just rearing up and striking Taylor as he pushed forwards. Taylor prods suspiciously at the pitch.

You feel the result hinges on the performance of Kane Williamson.
The players are taking drinks while Williamson gets the once-over from the physio. He seems to be okay, while Jeetan Patel has arrived with some new helmets for the captain.

The helmet has done the job, that's the main thing. In the days of no helmets, that's more than just a ringing in the ears.
That's nasty for Williamson - a good short ball from Plunkett and he doesn't deal with it well at all. He ducks into the line of the ball and it strikes him on the helmet, near the ear. The players are straight over to check he's alright, and the physio comes on for a consult.

Joe Manson: In response to David Hoy (15:46) ....England aren't playing in Edinburgh!
Target 311
Ross Taylor is greeted to the wicket with a short ball from Ben Stokes that he ducks, tucking his body up like a turtle going into its shell. Taylor launches into a booming drive that bounces towards Moeen on the edge of the circle.

The bat comes down from third slip or gully, cutting across the ball on impact. It's a habit he's tried to correct, but this one has ended up in the safe hands of Joe Root. New Zealand are in a bit of trouble.
Guptill c Root b Stokes 27 (NZ 63-2)
Catching practice in the slips! Oh, Guptill does do that quite a bit; slicing a drive but it's loose, away from the body, and the ball flies off the outside edge to Joe Root in the slips. He was hanging back, the position was all wrong, and that's a simple take for Root.

It's good pace from England today. All four of them are the top end of 80mph.
Guptill 23, Williamson 28
Williamson prefers facing Plunkett, by the looks of things. Three twos to start the over, both batsmen running hard, and Morgan can't quite whip the bails off as he tries to run out his opposite number. Ooft, that's a snorter from Plunkett, a bouncer that Guptill gets into a real tangle trying to avoid. In fact, that may have taken a touch of glove, but a leaping Buttler couldn't get a mitt to it. Nasty.

Mike Gormley: The 1517 from Birmingham to Penzance, because, well... it's a train.
Here's Ben Stokes and he draws a false shot out of Williamson, another little wafty drive, no foot movement. Williamson then drives aerially, perking the interest of a few close fielders. That's a good over from Stokes, just three from it, and both Williamson and Guptill practice their drives as Stokes gets his jumper back from the umpire.

It's been a bit claggy, this New Zealand start. Not a lot of flow but the runs are starting to come.
Target 311
A change of bowler for England as Liam Plunkett comes on and he carries on where Ball left off, back of a length, pinning Williamson and Guptill on the back foot. New Zealand will nab an extra run though as the cover fielder throws the ball at the stumps, lighting them up, but the rebound beats Plunkett.

Nigel Williams: Cheer up spectators in Cardiff, my train from London to Manchester is delayed by a trampoline blown on the line!
Wood's had enough of this giving the batsmen something to hit business. He's miserly as he continues, the field cutting off all of Williamson's back foot punches. He looks a tad frustrated: 18 from 37 balls at the moment. The wind carries on hurling across the ground.
