Decided to introduce my German friend to cricket by taking her to see the final day of Middlesex v Notts in 2015 as it was only a fiver. Two hours of both teams playing for a draw in front of a sea of empty seats convinced her never to return, sadly.

If you're not familiar with Cardiff, the straight boundaries are short and the square ones are quite long. It's like the batsman is taking strike in the centre of a rugby pitch, with the posts at deep point and deep square leg. Twice Mendis takes Junaid square on the leg side, first a clip off the hips and then a pull. It's taken Pakistan nearly 50 minutes to bowl 10 overs.

Pakistan have come back strongly, At one stage it appeared Sri Lanka were at home, with their improvisation of shots. Let's see what happens now.

Now then, the man born in Wales is bowling in Cardiff. Imad Wasim, formerly of Swansea, brings his left-arm darts to the attack. Barely a run-up, popping out from behind the umpire, angling the ball into the pads. Imad has a curtains hairstyle and a meaty silver chain around his neck. Good start. Three singles.

Richard Pettinger: Had Lords to myself years ago - saw a Mike Brearley century v Lancashire and then Wayne Daniel and Vince Van der Bijl bowling. Absolute magic!

  6. SL 37-1published at 8 overs

Blimey, has Kusal Mendis come straight from the nets? This straight drive off Junaid Khan is the shot of a man who has been batting all night. The groundstaff have positioned themselves on the covers, but that might be for comfort, rather than a threat of rain. There's a Sri Lanka fan in the crowd who only has a Malinga wig and a flag to keep him warm. He looks freezing. Here's the Gunathilaka wicket. A ruddy awful shot.

Good bowling from Pakistan at the moment, getting a hint of uneven bounce and not giving Sri Lanka anything pitched up or anything wide.

  8. SL 30-1published at 7 overs

    Dickwella 17, Mendis 1

There's a chap with a magnificent beard already tucking into an early lunch. Let's be honest, watching cricket is mainly about sitting still and eating. Slightly brighter in Cardiff, Dickwella celebrating the lifting of the gloom with a whip off Amir through mid-wicket for three. He's looked in decent touch this morning.

I am a neutral and enjoying a 40th birthday gift of a day out here today. What's more, a very kind steward upgraded my dad and I to lovely comfy seats in the media centre - result!

Mark and Robert, in tidy seats overlooking the play!

Replays don't make it look any better for Gunathilaka. It was a length ball and he tried to slap it through the covers as if he was Garfield Sobers. No feet, leaning back. The problem for Gunathilaka is that he isn't Sobers. Malik could have taken the catch in his mouth. Kusal Mendis is the new man.

What a hideous, hideous shot was that. He just simply lobbed a catch, off the back foot. The easiest catch you can imagine. A rather surreal dismissal, the speed of the ball after he hit it was almost like an under arm throw.

    Gunathilaka c Malik b Junaid 13 (SL 26-1)

Gone! One shot too many from Danushka Gunathilaka and he's heading back to the hutch. Looking to drive Junaid Khan when the ball isn't really there, he can only lob it to Shoaib Malik at mid-off. Awful shot, really.

Tim Stubbs: My first ever Test was on 2nd July 2000. It was England v Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, not one person in the seats - rain stopped any play. Plenty at the bars though.

Mohammad Amir isn't going to be offering himself up for that kind of treatment. Skiddy run-up, haircut you can set your watch to, line and length. Down to one, wide slip, a stray on to the pads gives Sri Lanka their only single from the over. If you're interested in the weather here it is. My take is that you don't need a weatherman to tell you when it's raining.

It's beautiful, wonderful cricket from Dickwella. Sri Lanka have started in a more than positive fashion. They have made their intention known.

Hello, this is starting to get good. Gunathilaka, one of the finds of the tournament, is taking a liking to Junaid Khan. First some stand-and-deliver through the covers for four, then a swipe over the leg-side for another boundary. The sort of entertainment that illuminates a dreary Cardiff morning. Then a Dickwella scoop for four! It's like watching Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana.

You do wonder if some of these games would have been better off at slightly smaller grounds. The amount of spectators in there at the moment would make somewhere like Hove or Chelmsford feel quite full. I mean, not many neutrals are taking a day off work for Sri Lanka v Pakistan, are they? Lucky for Dickwella, a chip goes high in the air and plops over the back-tracking square leg.

Being first into a Glamorgan game at Cardiff, no one else in the stands then we realised there was a free bar in progress for members before the match started. Never run so fast in my life.
