  1. Eng 118-2published at 25 overs

    Morgan 19, Root 42

It's a change of ends for Mohammad Hafeez, who now has the slight breeze behind him. And that's four! Morgan opens his stance, leans back and cracks the ball down towards the pavilion. His feet were so quick there, doing a jig that a Strictly Come Dancing contestant would be proud of, and there was plenty of power in the shot.

That's how you know Joe Root is world class. You don't feel like he's been out there too long but before you know it he's on 50 and then picks up his scoring rate.

  3. Eng 111-2published at 24 overs

Do keep your stories coming in. The more obscure the sport, the better. Leg-spinner Shadab is back on, slip in place, but England aren't going the aerial route. Both Root and Morgan shovel a few singles into the leg side to keep things ticking over, before Morgan removes his helmet and wipes a few beads of sweat away. It's sunny out there, which is a rarity in this competition.

Azhar Mahmood challenged me to a frame of snooker. I won on the black in a low quality encounter.

    Root 38, Morgan 13

Ooh, that's close! Hasan goes short and Morgan gets a little tickle on to the leg side delivery, but Sarfraz can't quite cling on as he dives to his right, and that'll be four. That's England's first boundary for 55 deliveries, which shows how well Pakistan have bowled. Hasan isn't looking too comfortable, here - he's just limping a tad as he walks back to his mark and doing a bit of stretching.

Just joining us? You've missed a good morning's play after Pakistan won the toss and asked England to bat.

Jonny Bairstow has been busy, if a little lucky at times...

    Bairstow dropped on 27

His opening partner Alex Hales, however, wasn't as fortunate and made just 13.

Joe Root, however, is going well and, despite Jonny Bairstow's dismissal, looks set for a big score.

The 100 is up for England, courtesy of a shovel through mid-wicket from Morgan. It's not been the most fluid start to a one-day innings from England, but this pitch is slow and Pakistan have bowled pretty well. England might just be starting to up the ante now as they work Mohammad Hafeez for back-to-back singles.

There seems to be some reverse swing out there. Both teams will be happy with where they are at. England realise it's a sluggish pitch, it won't be a huge score. Pakistan will be pleased they have two wickets.

  10. Eng 96-2published at 21 overs

    Morgan 6, Root 33

A hint of width from Hasan Ali and Morgan jumps on it, but he can't beat the cover fielder. Morgan then dances down the pitch and plays a shot that Rafael Nadal would be proud of, a forehand club that ends up trickling slightly lamely into the pitch.

Pakistan fans might be outnumbered, but they are definitely making more noise. Every dot ball cheered, Hasan Ali's name being chanted. I'm at the River Taff End and have just taken a Pakistan flag to the face. "Should have brought my hooter," says one chap.

  12. Eng 93-2published at 20 overs

    Root 31, Morgan 5

Ooh, Mohammed Hafeez strikes Morgan on the pad as the England captain goes to reverse sweep. Hafeez looks imploringly at his captain, but there's no reviews left: that went on the second ball of the day. Morgan then jogs a single to bring up 5,000 ODI runs for England. He's only the third England player to achieve that feat, behind Paul Collingwood and Ian Bell.

Marc Sepetowski: I once attended a Jimmy Anderson benefit day and got to face him in the nets. Thankfully he only lobbed up a few spinners!

Will Chilcott: I once played pool with Jimmy Anderson and Matt Prior in Colombo. Jimmy found a lovely bit of late movement with the cue ball.

  14. Eng 89-2published at 19 overs

    Hasan 2-0-6-1

I like Hasan Ali. All pointy elbows and high knees. Root pulls out as Hasan reaches the crease, making the fair point that one of the fielders was still shuffling around in his eyeline. Hasan responds with a bouncer that's got a bit of fizz in it, but not much aim, ending up a bit legside. The umpire responds accordingly, giving it wide, and Root jogs a single from the next ball.

Here's Jonny Bairstow's wicket - a pretty tame dismissal, all in all, and that came after he'd been dropped twice.

  16. Eng 84-2published at 18 overs

    Morgan 1, Root 27

A double change for Pakistan, with off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez on to bowl. It's a tidy, and speedy, over too, nicely flighted, and Morgan gets off the mark with an awkward-looking pull through mid-wicket.

I like Bairstow, he's a fine player, but I can't help but think if Jason Roy had had that amount of luck today we'd have been about 30 or 40 runs further along.

  18. Eng 81-2published at 17 overs

Hasan, a spring in his step, finishes off the rest of the over, and Morgan greets his first ball with a pleasantly straight bat. That was a nice bit of bowling from the Pakistan seamer, not giving England any width.

Drinks breakpublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

    Eng 80-2

The drinks have arrived, which gives us a chance to look at these shots from Joe Root, and give Eoin Morgan time to get to the wicket and practice a few straight drives.

It was a straight forward catch. Bairstow has been reprieved twice and I thought it might be his day after that. He never middled that one. Hasan is a good bowler, quicker than you think and he hits the bat.
