  1. Eng 44-1published at 8 overs

    Raees 4-0-18-1

Rumman Raees will continue and Bairstow flicks the ball down to third man and stampedes down the wicket, turning a single into two. Has he had a few energy drinks before coming out to bat? Very much an eager beaver. Root rounds off the over with a gorgeous bit of timing to clip the ball off his pads and down to the boundary.

  3. Eng 37-1published at 7 overs

    Bairstow 22, Root 2

We're gonna have a bit of spin, with Swansea-born Imad Wasim into the attack. He's the first Welsh-born cricketer to play for Pakistan. He spears the ball in, bowling a little flatter to Joe Root, and Root has to change his shot at the last minute to keep the ball away from his stumps. He gets off the mark to the final ball of the over, though, with a little push through the field.

  4. Eng 34-1published at 6 overs

Double Yorkshire at the crease now as Joe Root joins Jonny Bairstow, and he lets a decent delivery from Raees nip past his off stump.

That was more a case of Hales getting himself out than the bowler getting him out. He will be absolutely disappointed with that because he was looking fairly confident in the middle.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.5 overs

    Hales c Babar b Raees 13 (Eng 34-1)

Where's that come from?! There was nothing really threatening in that over and Alex Hales has clipped a simple catch up to cover. That was catching practice, really, Hales aiming to smash the ball over the infield, but Barbar just had to bend his knees and snaffle the ball with ease. That's Rumman Raees' first ODI wicket for Pakistan.

Rob Meech: Glorious day, global tournament semi-final - and the ground is barely half-full. The marketing has been non-existent.

Ryan Maltby: Already Bairstow has contributed more than Roy has in the full tournament.

  8. Eng 29-0published at 5 overs

    Bairstow 16, Hales 13

If I've learnt anything from technology being introduced into cricket, it's that I'd make a shoddy umpire. Junaid continues and draws Bairstow forward, the ball looping up off an outside edge, and it lands just in front of the cover fielder. This pitch is slow, though, and the ball is going through to keeper Sarfraz at roughly big-toe height. Hales proves that point by lashing a wide, full delivery through the covers and away to the boundary.

It's fractional. It's not a stinker of a decision by the umpire, it was a very tight call.

    Eng 24-0

It's pitched outside leg! It's another marginal call too, the ball just inching outside the line. I thought Hales was a goner. Mickey Arthur, up in the Pakistan dressing room, shakes his head in annoyance.

Raees has struck Hales on the pad, and he's been given! He has a long chat with Jonny Bairstow before making the T-sign...

TMS new boy Chris Woakes and I haven't got off to a great start. When I tried to check in to my hotel last night, I was told that my reservation had gone to "Mr Woakes". To compound my fury, the England man chose that moment to appear on his way out for dinner. I ended up sharing a room with 5 live's Henry Moeran. Livid.

  13. Eng 20-0published at 3 overs

    Junaid 2-0-18-0

I wouldn't have moved Root up. I don't think England would have wanted to make any more changes than were necessary, and replacing Roy was really their only major issue. Bairstow gets away with one as he chips Junaid into the air and the ball zips past a diving Mohammad Hafeez and away to the boundary. That's much better though: short and Bairstow latches onto it, pulling it to the fence with a hearty thwack. These two are running really well, putting the fielders under pressure, and they'll take 13 runs from that over.

Derry: So glad Bairstow gets a shot. Not too sure he should be opening though. Root and Hales to open and Bairstow in three or four, surely?

The Patio Cricketers: Bairstow'sjob should be a bit easier with Amir ruled out but shame not to see a full strength Pakistan team.

Charlie Parry: Let's go Bairstow! Time to knock the ball out the park and show @englandcricket, external what they've been missing.

  15. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

    Bairstow 2, Hales 5

Here's left-armer Rumman Raees, and Bairstow tests out his and Hales' new partnership by calling for a sharp single, and his partner responds quickly. Hales doesn't look in the mood to pat the ball around - he's down the pitch to his third delivery from Raees and thudding the ball into the covers. It's only a single though. Raees responds by beating Bairstow with a nice delivery, the ball holding its line, but it barely carries through to the keeper. That's not an encouraging sign with the new ball.

Jonny Bairstow has never opened the batting for England before but he's a world class player. You'd like to think his technique can stand up to opening the batting. There is a step up from county cricket but he'll be used to it.

  17. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

I enjoyed Bairstow's non-reaction to that near miss. He kept his eyes closed, head down, no expression. That was so very close to being out, though. Bairstow gets off the mark with a little push into the covers, before Alex Hales times a straight drive to perfection to pick up the first boundary of the innings. A nice quiet start to proceedings then...

Umpire's call, and only by a whisker! Dearie me, that was a centimeter away from being out. Bairstow is a lucky fella.
