  1. Pak 49-0published at 10 overs

    Azhar 14, Fakhar 28

Ooft! Ball decides he likes this tactic of going short to Fakhar, bangs it in but the batsman has seen it early and he gets onto the front foot to thud the ball through mid-wicket. Fakhar likes the look of Ball, evidently. He's not afraid to use his feet and comes darting down the wicket again to mow a couple into the off-side. Down the pitch again, hoicking a pull, the top edge swirling in the air, two fielders converge - and it drops right in the middle of them. That went so, so high, and they've only got a single out of it. Jake Ball looks about as happy as you'd expect.

If, for whatever reason, you can't see the action (getting food, nipping to the gents, taking a dip in the river), the noise of the crowd keeps you informed. A hump of sound - England misfield, a wide. A roar - Pakistan boundary. A gasp - Fakhar has taken one on the helmet. An earth tremor - Fakhar has top-edged for six.

  3. Pak 41-0published at 9 overs

    Fakhar 21, Azhar 13

Wood will continue, after a brief chat with his captain, with Ben Stokes hovering in at leg gully. There's the short ball and Fakhar deals with it nicely, a much more controlled pull that flies over the close fielders and skips merrily into the rope. Wood follows that up with another bouncer and Fakhar briefly considers giving this one the treatment, before moving his bat down and swaying his body out of the way.

Sam Rogers: Paul Collingwood would be a demon bowling his dibbly-dobblies on this track.

Steve Davies: I think this is the game that shows how much we miss Chris Woakes.

  5. Pak 35-0published at 8 overs

    Target 212

Four! Azhar had been under pressure but that's a lovely punch off the back foot, beating a diving Jonny Bairstow to pick up another boundary. Ball doesn't like that and narrows his line, bowling a touch shorter, too. He bowls straight, the ball keeping low, and Azhar pats the rest of the over away.

Here's what England's bowlers had to contend with first up - positive and aggressive movement from the Pakistan batsmen.

  7. Pak 30-0published at 7 overs

This is a corker of an over from Wood. He beats Azhar time and time again, encouraging the drive and the ball just moves past the outside edge. There's not a lot of foot movement from the batsman, just enough to get him onto the front foot and throwing his hands into the drive. Wood stares up at the sky as he rounds off the over with another nice delivery. Just a single from that one.

  9. Pak 29-0published at 6 overs

    Azhar 8, Fakhar 15

That's excellent running from Pakistan as Eoin Morgan dives over the ball at cover, putting Rashid under pressure in the deep. Rashid gets a hand to it and then fumbles, and Fakhar is sharp to react to Azhar's call for a second. Ball doesn't like that and responds with a delivery that hugs off stump and just creeps past Azhar's booming drive.

We're only into the fifth over and Azhar Ali is already struggling to time the ball. Fakhar won't care - he's just going to try and smash everything.

    Target 212

Wood goes short and Azhar, snuggled deep in the crease, just avoids chopping the ball down onto his stumps. A nice whip off his hips only brings him a single. Azhar's not finding it as easy as his partner to time his shots. Fakhar briefly considers smashing a delivery into the stands but changes his mind, instead dropping his hands and running a speedy single.

Here is the first six of the match, a good old fashioned swing from Fakhar and the ball whizzing up and over the keeper's head.

  13. Pak 23-0published at 4 overs

Hello, Fakhar comes zipping down the pitch and pulls with aplomb, a hearty turn of the wrists as he works the ball away for another boundary. Azhar, who has looked the shakier of the two, prods forward and Ben Stokes sticks out a mitt at slip to stop Pakistan nabbing a single. That dropped just short of Stokes, actually, the ball hitting the turf a second before Stokes got his hand down to the ground.

  15. Pak 18-0published at 3 overs

    Fakhar 7, Azhar 5

Wood, one leg stretching behind him like a runner on the starting blocks, bangs the ball in and Fakhar lobs his bat at it. He doesn't get it anywhere near the middle, the ball spooning up off a top edge, but it bounces in front of the man down at fine leg.. Wood responds with a corker of a delivery, tempting Azhar into a push forward and just missing the outside edge by a whisker.

  17. Pak 16-0published at 2 overs

    Azhar 4, Fakhar 6

Pakistan were probably thinking it wasn't going to be their day after the first few overs of England's innings, though. And look how that went... Here's Jake Ball, two slips in place. Five wides are signaled as he strays onto the pads, the ball swinging away down to the third man boundary.

The good/bad news, depending on your point of view, is that my hayfever has kicked in so I'm watching Azhar Ali leave the ball through a haze of tears. The first ball of the innings is a leg side wide, which gets Pakistan underway, before Azhar pulls nicely down to the ground for a couple. And that's the first six of the match! A big ol' top edge from Fakhar races over Buttler's head and over the ropes.

Eoin Morgan gives his pep talk, huddling his team around him, before they make their way out onto the field. They're followed by openers Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman, who bump fists as they arrive at the crease. It'll be Mark Wood to open the bowling for England. Here we go...
