Jeevan Mendis spent most of the first two sessions at the Spitfire Ground keeping warm, then struck in his first over just before tea.
The Sri Lankan trapped James Tredwell leg before for seven as Derbyshire continued a domination of the game that seemed barely possible when the home side were 83 without loss after 90 minutes play.
At tea, Kent had been reduced to 203-8 with three wickets for Will Davis and three for Luis Reece whose thoughts will be turning towards opening the batting with Billy Godleman before the day is out.
