Harry Gurney bowls it onto Alastair Cook's pads, you know the rest. Clip. Four.

Gurney suddenly finds a bit of bounce which flies past Cook's edge, but no harm done, and the opener follows it up with a cut to the boundary.

Cook has raced onto 31 off 21 balls.

  2. Essex 29-0published at 4 overs

    Chopra 6, Cook 22

It's a joy to watch Alastair Cook batting when he's like this. Anything straight, he's simply whipping it away.

Cook picks up a couple of twos into the leg side off Jake Ball, but it's a better over. Just four from it.

  3. Essex 25-0published at 3 overs

    Chopra 5, Cook 19

Goodness me, that's pure timing from Alastair Cook. Harry Gurney strays onto his legs and the left-hander simply flicks it behind square to the boundary.

Cook then finishes the over with a dreamy cover drive over the ropes. Magnificent batting from the England opener, super start for Essex.

  4. Essex 13-0published at 2 overs

    Chopra 5, Cook 7

You don't bowl there to Alastair Cook. Jake Ball bangs one in short and wide, four.

Varun Chopra is also in on the act, creaming the big England paceman through the covers to the boundary.

    11 from the over.

Dominic Ward: I've not missed the cup final since 2012. Last year was awful weather-wise. The July switch is fine by me!

  6. Essex 2-0published at 1 over

    Chopra 1, Cook 1

It's a probing first over from Notts left-armer Harry Gurney. Little bit of outswing too.

Both batsmen are off the mark with a single apiece.

Alastair Cook scored more than 500 runs in the eight group matches. Good batsman is Alastair!
