You'd swear that there's nobody here now. Every time there's a boundary from Nottinghamshire, the crowd fall silent.

These are just good cricket shots from Notts, nothing more than that. You have to sit back and admire that.

  2. Notts 50-1published at 5 overs

    Hales 29, Wessels 9

BOSH! Riki Wessels carts Neil Wagner over cover and it races to the boundary.

Alex Hales is also motoring - he flays the New Zealander through the covers and is up to 29 off 13 balls.

  3. 'Hales like a duck to water'published at 17:57 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

    Niall O'Brien
Ireland wicketkeeper on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Alex Hales looks like he's taken to being back in Notts colours like a duck to water, Jake Ball less so.

But they're both county-contracted players and if they're asked to play, they will play despite the disappointment they felt earlier this week with England.

  4. Notts 38-1published at 4 overs

    Hales 22, Wessels 4

Cheeky. So, so cheeky from Riki Wessels.

The Notts batsman gets down on one knee and scoops Jamie Porter to the boundary behind square.

Alex Hales also found the rope in that over with a clip through mid-wicket. It's such a good batting wicket - 370 might not be enough.

  5. Notts 29-1published at 3 overs

    Hales 17, Wessels 0

Yep, television replays suggest Alex Hales hit the ground rather than nicking behind.

Fast start for Notts, but Essex have grabbed that all-important wicket of Michael Lumb already.

  6. Shout for caught behindpublished at 2.3 overs

    Notts 26-1

Howzaaaat? Not out. Neil Wagner screams at the umpire thinking Alex Hales has nicked him behind, but he shakes his head.

    Bat on ground maybe?

  7. Notts 22-1published at 2 overs

    Hales 10, Wessels 0

Riki Wessels is the new man in and sees out Jamie Porter's final ball of the over.

  8. wicket

WICKET Lumb (c Harmer b Porter) 11published at 1.5 overs

    Notts 21-1

    Early breakthrough for Essex!

After a couple of boundaries past slip and through the covers, Michael Lumb tries to flick Jamie Porter past square leg but spoons up a catch to Simon Harmer at point.

    Big wicket for the hosts.

  9. Notts 12-0published at 1 over

    Lumb 3, Hales 9

Halesy is away immediately. Short from Neil Wagner, slapped over mid-wicket for four.

Next ball, the England opener places it through the covers to the boundary.

12 off the first over. They've just got to keep that up for another 294 deliveries now!

  10. Notts 2-0 (Target 371)published at 0.1 overs

    Lumb 2, Hales 0

Here we go. Neil Wagner opens things up for Essex and Michael Lumb is off the mark with a punch through square for two.

    Essex 370-5 (50 overs) v Notts

    Thanks Adam.

Well, what a chase we've got on our hands with a certain Alex Hales set to open for Notts.

Don't forget, Nottinghamshire scored 429 a few days ago to beat Somerset - but they've got the old 'scoreboard pressure' to deal with this time around.

The players will be back out shortly...

    Essex 370-5 (50 overs) v Notts

So, not long now until the second innings of this game gets started.

371 is the victory target for Nottinghamshire to get to Lord's, where they last appeared in a domestic final in 2013.

Essex haven't been back to the Home of Cricket since 2008, so they'll be keen to do all they can to get there.

Gary Smee will take you through the start of the Nottinghamshire reply shortly....

  13. Essex's highest List A scorespublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 16 June 2017

So, where does that 370-5 rank on the all-time list for Essex? Fourth is the answer. And the second best against a first-class county.

    Here's the top five...

    • 391-5 v Surrey - The Oval, 2005
    • 388-7 v Scotland - Chelmsford, 1992
    • 386-5 v Wiltshire - Chelmsford, 1998
    • 370-5 v Notts - Chelmsford, 2017
    • 368-7 v Scotland - Chelmsford, 2013
