A hearty rendition of God Save the Queen and plenty of youngsters in the ground, amply equipped with those foam objects resembling large ice pops that fans are urged to bang together and are in no way annoying. England openers Sarah Taylor and Tammy Beaumont are out there are we are all set to begin under the lights.

  7. Happy memoriespublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

Heather Knight will have happy memories of Grace Road, it was the venue for her first match as England captain and she scored an unbeaten half century in a seven-wicket win over today's opponents Pakistan.

  8. Grace Roadpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

So this match is at Grace Road, where the incomparably elegant David Ivon Gower played with such distinction for Leicestershire. The ground is south of the city centre and a short distance south of Leicester City FC's King Power Stadium. If there are any further delays, spectators might decide on a trip to the National Space Centre, which is to the north of the city.

  9. Play to start at 11published at 10:38 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

The umpires have decided that play can begin at 11:00 BST and it will remain a 50-over match.

  10. Is the rain easing?published at 10:33 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

Former England spinner Holly Colvin is out in the centre in her new ICC role. Richie Richardson, the ex-West Indies skipper is the match referee. He won't be needing his famous wide-brimmed maroon sun hat today but some of the lighter covers guarding the square are now being removed.

Expect more rain...published at 10:26 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

BBC Weather's Philip Avery on TMS: "There was a finger of rain showing to the south of Grace Road since this morning, and there's more to the north. This little burst shouldn't last long, but you're going to need the floodlights today and the covers as I can't promise this is going to be the last rain you'll get today. It'll be leaden skies and the deeper we go into the day, the more likely that the match will be curtailed by more significant rain."

    Charlotte Edwards
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The weather report's not filled me with much joy. England's one-day international here against Pakistan last year had the first day washed out by rain, so they've not had much joy in Leicester.

NB There is no reserve day for these group games (although there is for the semis and final). If both sides cannot face 20 overs, it's a no result and they take one point each.

  15. State of playpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

A reminder that both teams began the competition with a defeat, England losing by 35 runs to India after being bowled out for 246 and Pakistan beaten by South Africa by three wickets on this same Grace Road ground.

Is the weather going to beat them both today? Let's hope not.

It's been getting grey and gloomier since the toss took place, and the covers are coming on.

  17. rain stops play

Rain stops play (before it has started)published at 10:18 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

Let's get that all-important weather forecast. If we're still here at 20:00 I'll be in trouble, I've got to be at Bognor B&Q at 7:30 in the morning. Well we have had the toss and the teams but now the rain has returned and the covers have come back on. The groundstaff are likely to be in for a lot of exercise pushing those covers on and off today.

  18. Both teams unchangedpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

The team news is that there is no team news, in that both sides are unchanged. England's Dani Wyatt makes her 50th appearance.

  19. Welcomepublished at 10:14 British Summer Time 27 June 2017

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the Women's World Cup match between England and Pakistan from Leicester. The weather is decidedly uncertain, the floodlights are on already, but first things first, Pakistan have won a potentially crucial toss and have unsurprisingly opted to field first.
