  1. 'Brilliant from Archer'published at 19:33 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    Ebony Rainford-Brent
Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

It's brilliant watching Jofra Archer bowl here, really probing that off stump line.

With his height, he gets that extra bounce too which is really awkward to face. Middlesex with some work to do now.

  2. Middlesex 48-4published at 7 overs

George Scott gets a half-volley to start with and he strokes it through the covers for four. The next though is right on the money and he is beaten all ends up.

  3. wicket

WICKET Morgan (c Brown b Archer) 4published at 6.3 overs

    Middlesex 44-4

Jofra Archer flashes a bouncer past Eoin Morgan's helmet and the next one is caught at gully. Two in three balls for the young Sussex paceman and Middlesex are on the back foot - both literally and figuratively.

  4. wicket

WICKET Simpson (c Evans b Archer) 11published at 6.1 overs

    Middlesex 44-3

That's a pretty ugly shot by John Simpson. He tries to pull through mid-wicket but only succeeds in lobbing a simple catch to mid-off.

  5. Middlesex 44-2published at 6 overs

England's Eoin Morgan is the new batsman and shoulders arms to his first delivery. That's his sighter and the next one is flayed just over the mid-on fielder and brings him four runs.

Morgan is unable to beat the man at cover from the final ball of the over and that's the end of the powerplay.

  6. wicket

WICKET McCullum (c Brown b Jordan) 26published at 5.2 overs

England's Chris Jordan deceives Brendon McCullum with a slower ball first up and the Middlesex opener is lucky to escape as a top edge just eludes the fielder at mid-wicket.

It doesn't cost Sussex, though, as a more orthodox line and length delivery next up brings his 14-ball cameo to an end. Ben Brown takes his second catch and this one is straightforward.

  7. Middlesex 38-1published at 5 overs

Here comes Jofra Archer. It isn't the longest run-up but he generates plenty of pace and goes past John Simpson's outside edge with his second delivery.

Simpson throws everything bar the kitchen sink at a wider one later in the over and it speeds past despairing keeper Ben Brown on it sway to the boundary. The next one is over 90mph, has no width and Simpson is rapped on the pads.

  8. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

    England 353 v South Africa 126-8

Close of play on day two of the third Test and England have had a day to remember.

After a Ben Stokes century had helped England to 353 in their first innings, debutant Toby Roland-Jones ripped through South Africa's top order.

The Middlesex seamer claimed 4-39 as the Proteas closed on 126-8.

They made a slight recovery from a perilous 61-7 earlier in the evening session. Read the full report of the day here.

  9. 6 runs

    Middlesex 31-1published at 4 overs

John Simpson smashes the first ball of David Wiese's new over over mid-wicket for four. A statement of intent?

Yes indeed it is. Brendon McCullum comes onto strike and hooks a short one onto the roof of the stand at deep square leg. The next one is hit a little flatter but with the same result - except the roof bit.

The New Zealander is hard to stop when he finds top gear - but no-one knows that better than Sussex skipper Ross Taylor, McCullum's Kiwi compatriot.

  10. Middlesex 13-1published at 3 overs

Brendon McCullum picks up the first boundary of the Middlesex innings as he sweeps Danny Briggs fine as the left-arm spinner strays outside leg. McCullum wastes a golden opportunity as he plays a full toss straight to mid-off, but sweeps the next ball square for his second four of the over.

  11. Middlesex 4-1published at 2 overs

John Simpson is the new batsman and can only drop his first ball down into the off-side. There's no run but an inside edge miscue then brings him a fortunate single to short fine-leg.

  12. wicket

WICKET Gubbins (c Brown b Wiese) 2published at 1.4 overs

South African David Wiese is into the attack and yields singles to the Middlesex openers from his first two deliveries, but his next ball is angled across Nick Gubbins and he obligingly nicks it to the keeper.

  14. Middlesex 1-0published at 1 over

Four dot balls from Danny Briggs before Nick Gubbins finally flicks away a single into the leg-side to get Middlesex up and running. How will Brendon McCullum approach this? Solid defence to his first ball. No run. Good start by the home side.

  15. Briggs up first for Sussexpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 28 July 2017

Spin to start for Sussex, with Danny Briggs handed the ball by skipper Ross Taylor. With Paul Stirling still nursing a groin injury, it's Nick Gubbins and skipper Brendon McCullum to open for Middlesex.

Right then, almost time for the off at Hove. No Middlesex batsman has managed a century in the T20 Blast so far this season (Brendon McCullum's 88 is the best). Is tonight the night?
