    92 overs

Katherine Brunt has joined Fran Wilson at the crease, and Perry is still struggling to contain her laughter after the manner of that dismissal. As Charles Dagnall on TMS suggests, if the ball had been an inch either side, it would have skimmed off Perry's forearm and away for runs.

Perry didn't even try to stop the ball. It hit her on her left arm and she just managed to take the catch.

    Taylor c & b Perry 29 (Eng 226-6)

Oh, big wicket. Just when she was going well, Sarah Taylor slaps the ball back to the bowler - it hits Perry, who knew nothing about it, and pops up nicely for her to take the catch. Perry finds this hysterically funny, but I can sense the pendulum may well have swung back towards Australia here.

Beamer! Ellyse Perry - who was removed from the attack for bowling high full tosses in one of the ODIs - lets loose a high, full-pitch delivery at Wilson, and they run a single. It's also a no-ball.

Why is it being called “dinner”; it has always been called “lunch”.

    Trevor Hobday, Clitheroe, Lancashire

It's because it's a day-night Test, and the Aussies like to have the breaks the other way round - 20 minutes between sessions 1 & 2, then 40 minutes between sessions 2 & 3.

    Taylor 29, Wilson 1

Schutt strays with her line, Taylor tries to help it on its way and four leg byes are the result. We also have our first no-ball of the Test, bowled by Schutt, and Wilson is off the mark with a single to take England's score to 222. The late, great Richie Benaud would be proud.

    Perry 17-2-45-1

Fran Wilson is next in for England, whose team selection allows them the luxury of a non-bowling specialist batter coming in at number seven. Taylor adds a single, while Wilson shoulders arms to the first ball of her Test career.

That's 90 overs bowled, with more than 40 minutes to spare before the close of play. See, it can be done!

That kind of came out of nowhere. Ellyse Perry hit the deck to try to extract some bounce, Elwiss thought "do I hook it or do I pull it" and it just flew up into the air.

She tried to bang it in, and it was a total miscue, a top-edge to backward square leg.

    Elwiss c Schutt b Perry 27 (Eng 214-5)

Just when England were going along very nicely, Ellyse Perry picks up her first wicket of the Test with a bouncer which Elwiss top-edges and Schutt runs backward from square leg to take the catch.

Australia have only used five bowlers so far. I wonder if at some point it might be worth Rachael Haynes having a bowl - she's a left-arm seamer.

    Schutt 18-7-30-0

Megan Schutt is finding some swing with the new ball, but in a sense the ball's doing a little too much, as an inswinger raps Elwiss on the pad but the ball was going down the leg side and the umpire shakes his head. Lisa Sthalekar on TMS wonders if Schutt should try bowling round the wicket to bring the lbw back into play.

Eyes down for the final hour of the day. (And if you've been with us since just before 03:00 GMT, I take my hat off to you). Perry whistles one past Elwiss's back-foot prod, there's a nod of mutual recognition between batter and bowler - but fortune then favours Elwiss as Perry finds the edge and the ball scoots away for four past the slips.

  16. Adelaide update: Anderson removes Painepublished at 09:35 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

Cricket Australia XI captain Tim Paine has become James Anderson's second victim of the day, falling lbw for 52 - the CA XI are 188-7 in reply to England's 293 all out. Highlights today have included fielding coach Paul Collingwood coming on as a sub fielder, so stretched are England's playing resources.

England will probably be slightly happier at the moment, as they're past 200 and have a long batting line-up. Australia probably need a couple of wickets in the last hour for it to be their day.

I'd have a smile on my face if I was hitting the ball as well as Sarah Taylor. Rachael Haynes doesn't quite have the same smile at the moment.

    Elwiss 23, Taylor 23

As if to punish Australia for failing to run her partner out, Taylor is offered another "please hit me" short and wide delivery by Perry, and smashes it to the cover point boundary. A single draws Taylor level with Elwiss (and also steals the strike off the last ball for the second successive over). England have scored 25 runs in six overs with the new ball.
