Jake Ball dangles his bat in front of his face and helps a short ball away for a single. He's actually angled the bat really nicely there, getting up on tiptoes and guiding the ball past gully. Joe Root looks pensive up in the dressing room as Broad defends, before tapping the ball away nicely for one. Cummins changes his angle, coming around the wicket to Ball, and the batsman chases a leg side delivery.

For those of you who were happily sleeping and you've been woken up by the wicket alerts - hi! It's business as usual for England's middle order. Jake Ball is off the mark with an outside edge that just about avoids Steve Smith's fingertips at slip and goes for four. Shot! When in doubt, slog. Ball gets on one knee and swings hard, guiding the ball over short leg's head and into the ropes. I love a tail-end slog. That's a proper shot though! Lyon spears it in a touch slower and Ball carves the ball through the covers for his third boundary of the over. He also gets a single to keep the strike!

It's a flat pitch! Australia have done well to keep themselves in the game but this is under-par from England.

Bairstow and Moeen are two of our best match-turning players and you feel they've been coaxed into throwing it away.

Stuart Broad, feet glued to the floor, swipes and misses at a Cummins delivery. He ducks under a short ball to round off the over.

Stuart Broad hits Nathan Lyon's first ball and runs, which means Bairstow gets to deal with a bunch of people yapping in his ear. That's good running from Bairstow as he pops the ball towards the covers and goes charging down the wicket. There's a brief collision between Broad and Lyon - Lyon gives him a bit of a shove, although it wouldn't even get you a yellow in the Premier League - before Broad drives nicely for two.

Ali Mason: Broad ducking before Cummins even releases the ball is a technique I can get behind.

Jake Ball is looking... I don't want to say nervous, but he doesn't look keen to get out there. Jonny Bairstow, meanwhile, works a delivery from Cummins off his stumps and away for a couple. Shot! Short from Cummins but there's no extra bounce, the ball sitting up nicely and allowing Bairstow to crack a cut away for four.

Nathan Lyon's pre-match comments, and his performance, have made him even more of a hero to the home fans. They chat "Gar-ry" when he goes to field on the square leg boundary. Meanwhile, Stuart Broad gets called an unprintable word. For the first time, the Gabba feels like the Gabbatoir.

Oh! Turn and bounce again from Lyon and the ball goes darting down the leg side, beating Warner and running away for four byes. As a plus for England - I know, I know - Moeen must like the look of this pitch. Bairstow jogs a single to bring Broad on strike, and he sweeps Lyon's first delivery for a boundary! There's a wry grin on his face as the ball clatters into the ropes.

Ollie Clamp: Well hello England batting collapse, we meet again.

Harrison Taylor: This isn't going well now. Would be a miracle to make it to tea.

Here's Pat Cummins. A packed leg side field awaits. Short balls ahoy. Cummins starts off with one that's misdirected, before Bairstow gets off the mark with a gentle push and run. Broad, who was practising ducking at the non-striker's end a second before, then gets to put his theory into play as Cummins bounces him straight up. For a tall fella, Broad doesn't half get himself down quickly. He also spends an age holding Cummins up by prodding the pitch and waving at the sightscreen. It's terrific determination to wind everybody up, and he ends up wearing one from Cummins in the ribs.

This game has suddenly sprung into life. It's been stalemate and soporific but all of a sudden it's all happening.

The problems that Trevor Bayliss spoke about in the warm-up matches - batsmen making sixties and not going on, those late collapses - are on full show here. This is brilliant from Lyon, though. Spellbinding. He beats Broad in successive deliveries, the ball, somehow, both times, dropping short of the slip cordon. A terrific wicket maiden.

That's a poor dismissal. Chris Woakes can bat and one of his favourite shots is driving full balls through cover.

But if he's been paying attention in the dressing room then he should know it's been turning.

It's a sucker ball where the bowler goes round the wicket, pitches it full and wide and invites the batsman to gate themselves because the ball is coming to come back like that

An elementary, naive, novice shot and I'd expect more from him than that.
