  1. Aus 7-1published at 4 overs

The left-handed Usman Khawaja is the new man in - Broad goes round the wicket to him.

Solid defence from the number three, who receives a fair bit of chirp from Broad for his troubles.

That's a great piece of bowling. He just had a poke outside off stump - it was quite wide from Broad, nice and full, and well held by Jonny Bairstow. It doesn't half make a difference if you get one early.

    Bancroft c Bairstow b Broad 5 (Aus 7-1)

    Early breakthrough for England!

Stuart Broad pitches it up on a good length and lures young Cameron Bancroft into hanging his bat into the corridor of uncertainty.

The new ball flicks the outside edge and Jonny Bairstow takes an excellent diving catch to his right.

The ball did nothing through the air or off the seam but the length did for the debutant. Jubilation for the tourists.

Forget the cricket, one chap has just proposed to a lucky lady in the swimming pool. He was wearing nothing but budgie smugglers. And a table has just collapsed in the press box. All happening.

  5. Aus 4-0published at 3 overs

Anderson not as quick as the Aussie pacemen early on but looking to use his guile and experience to outwit Bancroft. Nothing doing so far though.

A huge cheer then goes around the Gabba. It's not for Bancroft's leaving skills but a young gentleman has just proposed to his partner in the pool.

    She said yes.

  6. Aus 4-0published at 03:09 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2017

David Warner to face his first ball in this Ashes - Anderson on off stump and the aggressive opener in behind.

He's off the mark next up, clipping a shortish ball away for a single.

Anderson then gets on through Bancroft's defences and it hits the pads. A flurry of excitement from England but that was high and could've been some bad on it too.

That was a healthy play and miss, if there is such a thing.

  8. Aus 3-0published at 2 overs

Stuart Broad will of course partner James Anderson with the new ball. Decent carry early on, hanging it outside off to try and tempt Bancroft.

Broad then goes at the pads and the opener just dabs it away. Bancroft shuffling around his crease as he plays the ball.

A forward defence returns the ball to Broad, who shapes to shy at the stumps, but settles for a stare down.

Oof, another stare after a bit of nip sees Bancroft playing and missing. Some encouragement there perhaps? A maiden at least.

    BBC Test Match Special

Anderson is a very skillful bowler but there's a cliche about him only taking wickets in England. He's taken wickets all around the world in the past few years. He's a very skillful bowler.

  10. Aus 3-0published at 1 over

Watchful from Bancroft first up, defending well before he slides one off the face through third man for a couple to get off the mark.

The debutant's technique is to move towards off and get in behind, clipping to leg.

It's an approach that could make him vulnerable to the moving ball but no early swing at all as he flicks away for a single to end the over.

Cameron Bancroft will face first up, his first delivery in Test cricket to be sent down by England's James Anderson.

It’s funny, you check in before you go to sleep and the Zzzz’s allude you and so sneaking downstairs for a drink and a quick fix, you sort of know you’ll see the page refresh to display an England collapse!! What is a team to do!!

Toby Roland-Jones is off for a well-deserved kip after his Q&A on TMS over the lunch break.

(He's here in Salford by the way, not trying to sleep in the Gabba).

The sides are back out on the pitch. England in search of early Australia wickets.

Really looking forward to this. Don't you just love the Ashes?

Stuart Broad is striding purposefully around the Gabba outfield and play will be back underway shortly.

If you're just joining us - perhaps you've been woken up by your baby/pet/dodgy bloke next door who plays music in the early hours - then welcome.

Here's what you missed - England started the day well, despite a slow scoring rate that saw them never really race away from a slightly muted Australia.

The hosts then woke up and lured Dawid Malan in a short-ball trap, before Moeen Ali followed lbw to Nathan Lyon.

That precipitated a collapse as Chris Woakes was bowled and Jonny Bairstow top edged out trying to chase quick runs.

A handy thrash by Jake Ball, Stuart Broad and James Anderson saw England creep up to 302. Game on.

With Moeen Ali at six instead of Jonny Bairstow, I saw it as a deliberate, attacking move. Moeen is overly gifted to bat at eight in a Test team, which showed a great strength in depth.

I don't think it makes a great deal of difference. It may help Jonny to bat down at seven and recharge a bit more after keeping.

It's a real skill to try to dominate a game while marshalling the lower order and both have shown it in the past.

    It's a horrible feeling being a lower-order batsman during a collapse.

I actually really enjoy it as a chance to try and counter-attack a lot of the time. At other times the situation has definitely swallowed me up and you're part of the collapse.

Just under 20 minutes until lunch ends and England's bowlers get to have a crack at the Aussie top order.

And just under 10 minutes more with Toby Roland-Jones on Test Match Special so keep getting your questions in.

I don't like getting too caught up in the video analysis in the game - I like chatting to bowlers about things.

I'm not one for always searching for perfection. Bowling is not an art that can be perfected, you have to accept the ball is going to come out differently from day to day and it's about reacting to that.

Chris Moss: 302 is not disastrous. Game currently in the balance. A few early wickets and the pressure will be right on the Aussies.

Isaac Christopher: Not sure why everyone's disappointed. 300 batting first at the Gabbatoir on a surface offering to the bowlers isn't bad. Now get a go at a lacking Aussie batting line-up. No Brad Haddin if they fail now.
