That has turned miles and just missed the off stump. Virtually unplayable. Moeen will be interested seeing this turn too.

    Lyon 25-9-41-0

It's Nathan Lyon time. There's a slip and short leg in for Moeen, who gets beaten by an absolute pearler. The ball drifts in and spins and Moeen, camped on the back foot, just about avoids getting his stumps rearranged. Moeen, wisely, gets forward to the next couple of deliveries before a scampered single brings up the 50 partnership between the pair. It's come from 116 balls.

It's a good thing Moeen mishit that one or it would've gone straight down Shaun Marsh's throat. He's lucky it came off the toe-end of the bat.

I thought the pitch would've quickened up by now but it's still very tennis-ball bounce.

  4. Eng 212-4published at 89 overs

It does feel as though Australia had forgotten that they had an extra half-hour to play with this morning. Cummins still looks the most lively, as a delivery bounces and rises over Moeen's stumps, before he hooks a short ball up into the air. There's no control to the shot, Moeen playing away from his body, but the ball bounces just in front of an advancing Shaun Marsh. That was right off the toe-end of the bat. Moeen jogs a single so Malan gets the inevitable bouncer, and he ducks underneath it, before he takes his eye off the final ball of the over and gets a bit of a tap on the chest. I, obviously, take back everything I said about Australia being flat.

Kevin Pietersen is getting feisty on Australian TV. "If I was Australia coach I'd be getting a message out there to tell them to wake up".

    Hazlewood 22-5-56-0

I'll say one thing on that subject, Chris - this Australia side don't physically look as menacing as they did in the past. They're all too fresh faced. Josh Hazlewood is going to continue and spears in the best delivery of the morning, a full delivery that swings away from Malan's prod forward. Starc, exiled down at third man, applauds as Malan practises the shot. A maiden.

Ryan Richards: England should be looking to bat a defeat out of the equation today. Pile the pressure onto this Aussie side.

Joseph Willshaw: Late night dissertation work but still watching the Ashes. ROOTing for the boys.

Chris Baldwin: Am I tempting fate here? But are there that many players that scare you in the Aussie team? Hardly household names, we’ve got a chance in this.

  8. Eng 211-4published at 87 overs

    Moeen 20, Malan 36

Round the wicket comes Cummins, and Moeen leaves anything he doesn't need to play at. This is a good length from Cummins, slightly fuller than Starc was, and the ball seems to come through at a better height to Tim Paine. Moeen flat bats a wider delivery along the ground towards cover, and that'll be a maiden.

  9. Postpublished at 23:56 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

It all feels rather flat for Australia. So here's Pat Cummins to inject some energy into things. He's got Moeen in his sights, too...

If not for his back injury, Toby Roland-Jones might well have made England's starting XI for this Test.

Alas, the Middlesex man was ruled out of the Ashes but he's still a keen observer of course.

And he'll be taking questions from listeners during the lunch break on Test Match Special.

There's one or two people in the crowd wearing buckets on their head, although there's a few people who have delicately balanced them on their floppy straw hats. Stylish. Malan flat bats out the majority of the over, staying watchful, before he drives to pull a Hazlewood delivery that barely bounces above hip height. The ball ends up clattering off the underside of the bat and rolling rather tamely away.

I love the carefree nature of Moeen Ali but it's so obvious what's being served up to him here. Getting out playing those sort of shots - it's an easy wicket and Australia would just love it.

  13. Eng 211-4published at 85 overs

    Malan 36, Moeen 20

Ooh, that's the first short ball of the morning, and not surprisingly, it's been directed at Moeen. He sways underneath it before going for another big drive, the ball temptingly hanging outside off stump, and Moeen swats it just in front of a diving fielder at cover. That wasn't a million miles away, looking at the replay, with Moeen just reaching for it. He clips a full toss from Starc off his toes for a couple, but another short ball sits up and Moeen tries to pull it. The ball goes underneath the bat and Moeen ends up groping at fresh air, while Starc glares contemptuously at him.

Pat O'Hara: Australia will hit us hard this morning. We need to get through that spell. Pivotal part of this Test right now. Get through we can bat them out of it.

  15. Eng 209-4published at 84 overs

Two slips in place for Hazlewood as he bowls to Moeen, trying to draw the left-hander forawrd. Jonny Bairstow's watching on from the dressing room, although he's been momentarily distracted by something in the crowd. Moeen hangs on the back foot, staying watchful, before an inside edge spoons up temptingly to short leg, but the ball trickles to safety.

It looks a bit quicker out there but there were a couple of beautiful strokes from Malan there. It was full and he got on the front foot to put it away.

  17. Eng 208-4published at 83 overs

    Starc 21-4-53-1

There's a grimace from Steve Smith as Dawid Malan lets fly with the cover drive. Starc offers up a tempter outside off stump and Malan drives, and drives handsomely, to pick up another boundary. This has been a nice, positive start from England, as Malan plants his foot forward and pushes away the next few deliveries.

Maybe it's the early start, but the Gabba is barely half full when the players make their way to the middle. The sections housing England fans are well populated, but the Aussie supporters are taking their time.

    Malan 32, Moeen 17

Josh Hazlewood, who was a little off colour yesterday, gets the second over going. He stops a push down the ground from Moeen in his follow through and glares at Moeen, but the most laid back man in the England side is having roughly none of it. Shot! That's glorious from Moeen, driving Hazlewood handsomely back over his head and into the ropes. That's delightful.

That's a lovely one for England because Pat Cummins had to chase it all the way and the ball still beat him. That might be an over out of his legs.
