  1. Aus 402-7published at 143 overs

So frustrating for England after the early plays and misses but Shaun Marsh's innings has got better and better. It is probably the knock that will do the real damage to England in this match. He has taken Australia beyond 400. That's a very big first innings total in terms of day-night cricket.

This is Marsh's fifth Test hundred and his first at Adelaide. It took 329 minutes, and he faced 231 balls and hit 12 fours.

It's a richly deserved century. Shaun Marsh has batted quite magnificently. He's had many doubters - many Australian journalists were baffled by his selection - but he's proved therm all wrong.

With Shaun Marsh back on strike, England take an age setting the field, trying to get into his head.

Two men out on the hook. Short goes Woakes. Marsh hooks and straight in the gap! That brings up the century - his fifth in Test cricket.

Off comes the helmet. The Adelaide Oval stands and applauds.

  5. Aus 398-7published at 142.4 overs

Will there be another wicket? Australia are on the charge and there are 15 minutes until tea. Will the declaration come then? That should give Shaun Marsh time to get to his century. It looks inevitable at the minute. He cuts Chris Woakes hard through the off side but picks out the fielder in the deep. Just a single.

Darren Lehman is now prowling on the boundary rope. Does he want to get a message to his batsmen? Either way he looks very happy and so he should.

You feel the next wicket will come from a catch, out in the deep.

The Australians are hunting for that declaration.

  8. Aus 396-7published at 142 overs

    Marsh 95, Cummins 40

This is getting demoralising for Moeen Ali now. Whether it is his finger or his side, something must be up. Australia are taking him to the cleaners.

Three boundaries in the over and plenty of aggression from Pat Cummins in particular. The third four is a big heave over mid-wicket. Joe Root and James Anderson have a chat in the field. What can they do to stop this?

My frustration is these things were mentioned before the tour party was selected. That's where the smart thinking hasn't been smart. It hasn't been clever selection for a tour like this, in these conditions, with the Kookaburra ball. Stokes is a massive loss for this team. It's like saying to Australia "right, Steve Smth isn't playing." Once your best player isn't in the side, the confidence you arrive at the ground with lacks an edge.

  10. Aus 386-7published at 141 overs

    Marsh 90, 31 Cummins

The biggest indication that the battle in the middle is one-sided. The Mexican wave has started. 80% of the ground join in until the wave reaches the members who are motionless, leading the rest of the ground to boo. I'm sure Joe Root would love to be able to throw the ball to Mark Wood now for some express bowling, like Michael Vaughan says. Cummins and Marsh continue to milk Woakes.

Australia are playing this perfectly. They know what they've got in store and the conditions they've got to use later on.

People can't keep telling me Mark Wood is injured, when he's saying he's fit. He's either injured or he's not. He's here, playing cricket. In a four-man seam attack, you can have that luxury of a fourth seamer that can bowl a 15 over day. There's no question for me that he plays in Perth. Liam Plunkett should also have been in the squad.

  13. Aus 380-7published at 140 overs

    Marsh 89, Cummins 30

Joe Root has called an end to the experiment of bowling himself. Moeen Ali is back. There's very little turn. Marsh can just stay on the back foot and pick a space on either side of the wicket to steal a single.

It looks really flat out there now. There are about two hours to go until darkness falls. I fancy England will be batting then and it'll look anything but flat.

Before the England party was picked, one of the big things was pace. In a four-man seam attack, you can't have four bowlers who bowl at the same pace. Even if it's a left-armer for a different angle - it's just something different.

  15. Aus 378-7published at 139 overs

    Marsh 88, Cummins 29

Nothing cheers you up at 7:30 on a Sunday morning than an Ashes stat like that. Chris Woakes keeps on going and bowls an over with every ball outside of Shaun Marsh's off stump. Will England try to dry up Marsh's runs as he closes on the 'nervous nineties'?

When he decided to field first yesterday afternoon, having to bowl himself in the hour before tea on the second day really wasn't what Joe Root had in mind.

It's buffet bowling. Help yourself. They can't get Cummins out of his comfort zone. He's played forward and played very straight.

  19. Aus 378-7published at 138 overs

    Marsh 88, Cummins 29

    Remarkable scenes in Delhi.

Back to Adelaide. If you weren't already worried England fans, start now. England don't look like taking a wicket and now can't stop the runs. Root again to Cummins and the Australian chips a lovely drive over the bowler's head and to the fence for four.

There are cries of catch on the final ball of the over as Mark Stoneman lets one spill at short leg but I'm not sure that did make any contact with bat. Just thigh pad.
