Here's a bit more meat to the bones of today's summary...

    • James Vince, Joe Root and Alastair Cook were out early playing loosely at balls outside the off stump
    • Dawid Malan (19) got an inside edge to a Pat Cummins delivery to leave England 102-5 in their 38th over
    • Moeen Ali (25) and Jonny Bairstow (21) were brilliantly caught and bowled by Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc respectively
    • Chris Woakes goes for 36 after putting on 66 with Craig Overton (who top scored with 41 not out)
    • England were all out for 227 - 215 behind - but Australia chose not to enforce the follow-on
    • The tourists fight back as Australia lose Cameron Bancroft, David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith on the way to 53-4 at the close.

What. A. Day. Of. Cricket. It was painful for England fans as they collapsed to 227 all out in response to Australia's 442-8 declared - a deficit of 215.

The hosts chose not to enforce the follow-on, despite the prospect of having a go at England under the lights in the final session.

The tourists fought back with the ball moving all over the place and they reduce the Aussies to 53-4 at the close - a lead of 268.

Let's get into the reaction, recap and analysis.

So, England will begin tomorrow with their tails up, but Australia already have a 268 run lead and six wickets in hand. It's still heavily in their favour - and they get the easier of the batting conditions tomorrow morning.

Play starts at 03:01 GMT tomorrow. I'l be up bright and early to guide you through it, but stick around for all the reaction from today's play.

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

England all-rounder Chris Woakes, speaking to Test Match Special: "We fought back nicely but are still behind in the game. It is good to see a fight back and we showed good character and put them under pressure.

"We could have had a better day with the bat. We have played a few loose shots as a batting unit. We have to bat for longer periods and make the bowlers come back and bowl three, four or five spells.

"When you build a partnership and work as a pair it gets easier. When you first go to the crease it is tough but it is Ashes cricket you expect it to be tough."

I am frustrated that England didn't run in like this on the first morning. There has been real intent and energy but they were already over 200 behind.

For the proper optimists among you, England's highest successful run chase against Australia is the 332-7 they made in Melbourne back in 1928.

England weren't prepared to do the hard yards with the bat. They played too many poor strokes. In the top five there were too many gifts and you can't afford gifts.

You know what the Australian bowlers are going to do. It will be really full or short. You have to defend the stumps and duck and weave. If you see them off by the time you get the ball to 40 or 50 overs, as Overton and Woakes showed, it doesn't do as much.

The discussions about Smith not enforcing the follow-on are the same as the conversations over whether Root was right or wrong to put Australia in on the first day. For what it's worth, I think both decisions were fair. Root would have expected more from his bowlers when he gave them the ball, and Smith wouldn't have thought it would swing that much this evening. There's only so much you can do as captain.

  11. Postpublished at 11:33 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

Australia's Mitchell Starc on the decision not to enforce the follow-on: "There were pros and cons to both ways but it was up to [Steve] Smithy. There was no conversation with the bowlers. We have got to build our lead now. Night time is the best to bowl, but we have got two night sessions to come in the game so it was no waste of the night session tonight.

"To have them 50-3 in the easiest time to bat is big positive for us. To bowl them out for 227 and have a good lead is a massive tick for our bowling group."

England have got to think about the number of left-handers against Lyon. Bairstow has to come in between Malan and Moeen at six, or Ben Foakes has to come into the team.

If - and it's a big if - England can get Australia out quickly tomorrow, they have to be better with the bat. There were some poor shots on show today. James Vince's dismissal was awful first thing in the morning, Joe Root lost his balance and Alastair Cook rather gave his wicket away. If England offer up early chances, Australia will take advantage.

More from England's James Anderson on ABC: "We didn't expect any swing because we've not seen it throughout the game. We attacked where we could, bowled as full as we could and we got the rewards. A lot of the nicks haven't carried so we were looking to go full and straight."

Weird game, isn't it? You'd look at Australia being 53-4 and it seems great. Then you remember you trail by a ton of runs and you had a collapse with the bat in the best batting conditions of the day.

  19. 'We've got some frustrated players'published at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2017

England bowler James Anderson speaking to ABC: "We're a long way behind in the game so we can't over-attack in the field. We've got an outside chance. We've got a lot of work to do.

"We gave it absolutely everything and we've come away with four wickets, which we're delighted with. We attacked where we could, bowled as full as we could and we got the rewards.

"We've got some very frustrated players in the dressing room. We should have got more runs than we did."
