Quite, Chris. England have been lucky that they've not had to face any length of time under the lights. Rain intervened yesterday and Smith intervened today. The period England did spend in the dark yesterday was pretty edgy. And you always feel with this England batting line-up that a collapse is around the corner.

Trevor Kane: England are the ones being exposed as flat track bullies here...as soon as it swings Anderson, Broad et al. look like world beaters. Take that away and what have they got?

Chris Wood: Everyone’s suggesting Smith made an error. Really? England have to bat in those conditions for the next two evenings.

The ball was always going to do more tonight. Anderson bowled an incredible spell. England are still a long way behind in this Test match. I think Australia will get at least another 50 or 60 but I would have been amazed if England hadn't lost three or four wickets tonight. Steve Smith missed a trick.

Anderson was very economical, bowling seven maidens from his 10 overs, while Chris Woakes currently has figures of 2-13. That doesn't disguise the fact that Australia have a 268-run lead, and England could only muster 227 in the first innings. Most of those runs came from Craig Overton, too.

What Steve Smith has done with his decision is allowed England to create some positivity. England did not have to bat under lights much last night and today in the daylight got bowled out. It was the perfect opportunity to make England bat again.

There will be criticism of Smith for not putting England back in, but I get why he wanted to bat again. There will have been an element of wanting England to properly suffer; to bat big, knock the ball around and really demoralise England. As it happens, it's not worked out like that.

David McQueen: Can we give Lyon a yellow card for time wasting?

Matt Chapman: Shame cricket doesn't allow umpires to clamp down on time-wasting. All teams do it and it's a shame. Umpires should have power to extend play by how much time they waste.

Let's put things into perspective - Australia still have six wickets in the bag, including first-innings centurion Shaun Marsh, and Pat Cummins, who looks a bit wasted down at nine. They've got a big lead already and batting on this pitch is a different proposition during the afternoon than it is under lights. But if England have learnt their lesson with the ball, surely they can learn it with the bat, too?

There is a big cheer and that is a cheer of relief from the Australians.

I'll be honest. I didn't see that coming two hours ago. That was a sterling display of swing bowling from England, with James Anderson leading the way. Chris Woakes provided some excellent support. The frustrating thing is that it's taken England so long to get themselves this worked up.

Still, seeing Australia reduced to time wasting, when they've got a lead of over 250 and they've already sent a nightwatchman out, was fairly amusing.

Nathan Lyon is fine to continue. He gets squared up by the final delivery but he gets enough bat on it to pick up a single, and he keeps on running.

That is that. Australia, reduced to 53-4, lead England by 268 runs. Hanfdscomb and Lyon get a few comments on his way off.

This is a farce but everyone would do it.

Nathan Lyon has been struck on the hip and is doing some rather extravagant stretching. It also, handily, wastes some more time for Australia. James Anderson looks faintly amused by the whole proceedings. The physio comes on, and then 30 seconds later, goes back off.

Every ball looks like a wicket-taker. The ball is going all over.

There's six minutes of play remaining. Chris Woakes entices another grope out of Nathan Lyon, before another outside edge goes along the ground. Lyon does a bit of gardening to try and waste some more time. He's got four slips ready and waiting, and he almost offers them a catch as he goes for a tasty, flat footed drive. I'm not sure your nightwatchman should be aiming for the glorious cover drive, but there we go.

  18. Aus 52-4published at 25 overs

This is thoroughly entertaining from England but it's taken them three days to start bowling the right line to the Australia batsmen. In comes Stuart Broad, knees bounding up and down and Handscomb, trying to leave, gets a bottom edge that bounces past his stumps. Short from Broad, and Handscomb ducks, before another outside edge goes on the bounce to Joe Root at second slip. Maiden.

Jos Henderson: Steve Smith can't play swing at all...How is he world number one?

Nick Elliott: Steve Smith the fraud being exposed as a flat track bully again.

Ashley Legal: Tactical blunder made by Smith. Should have made England follow on!

Dearie me, Nathan Lyon's nearly out first ball! He gets himself slightly squared up by Chris Woakes, pushing forward, and the ball nips off the outside edge, but it drops short of third slip and Lyon can steal two. That's a beauty from Woakes in response, a delivery that nips back and slides past the outside edge, and then again! Since he's got the ball to move, Woakes has been wonderful to watch.
