Australia have got a 265-run lead, and they've sent out a nightwatchman in the form of Nathan Lyon. By the looks of things, Stuart Broad has just remarked on that subject to Lyon.

We have seen nothing like this with the ball moving around. If Smith had have known this he probably would have bowled and enforced the follow on.

Smith lbw Woakes 6 (Aus 50-4)

It's out! Umpire's call! Steve Smith is out for six!

That looked less out than the one that wasn't out, but England aren't complaining. It's nice again from Chris Woakes, coming in wide of the crease, and Smith just gets turned around once again. It's clattering into the top of off stump. England have shown such fight in this past hour.

That's struck Smith quite high on his back leg...

That is a pretty good shout.

Steve Smith has been given out lbw again! And he's reviewed it again! This looks less plumb than the previous one that, er, wasn't out...

Mickey Wallis: Oh for goodness sake, DRS is killing me! That is such rotten luck- Smith only reviewed in hope.

David Green: That Smith lbw looks more out every time I see it. Even he thought he was gone!

Matthew Wilcox: Nearly caused chairs to fly in the office with the Smith wicket/non wicket.

  8. Aus 50-3published at 23 overs

    Lead by 265

Stuart Broad, who did for Peter Handscomb in the first innings, sends down a few off stump tempters, and Handscomb leaves them alone. There's still some movement there from Broad but it's a bit short and Handscomb, dragging his bat inside the line, can avoid getting a nick on it. Still a touch too short from Broad and Handscomb, looking more positive than he did in the first innings, gets his foot forward and defends. A maiden for Broad.

England have got to bowl them out for 110 to have a chance. You would still have to bat very well but there is a chance. All you ever want in sport is a chance.

James Anderson is taking a breather, after an opening spell of 11-7-16-2. Here's Stuart Broad, with seven overs left in the day.

Andy Hellier: Has there ever been a world number one batsman less easy on the eye than Steve Smith?

  12. Aus 50-3published at 22 overs

That was obscenely good from James Anderson. He's got some gorgeous movement going. And it's also further proof, were it needed, that I'd be a rubbish umpire. This is better from Chris Woakes now he's got the ball to move. Peter Handscomb is still deep in his crease, restricted to patting and poking the ball away. That's nice, though, Handscomb getting his front foot forward and slicing a drive away for three. Smith blocks and then topples forward slightly, his right leg jutting out to the side.

Andrew Webb: Hang on...hang on....an Aussie collapse is happening!

Paul Smith: This Test is now officially interesting.

Patrick Brennan: Fantastically English to start playing well, just as it's become impossible to win the match.

And, naturally, Steve Smith is off the mark with a boundary. Anderson drifts on to the pads again but it's too straight, Smith having shuffeld across onto his leg stump, and it's easy for him to whirl his wrist and drive to the boundary. Anderson squares Smith up in response, the ball ballooning off Smith's knee, and Smith's arms and legs are akimbo as the ball pops away. This is super fidgety, even by Smith's standards.

What a heartbreaker for England. I think Smith thought he was stone dead.

    Aus 47-3

It's pitched outside leg! England can't believe it and, I'll be honest, neither can I!

I was so busy looking at where it struck Steve Smith - it him incredibly low down on the pad, it was probably cracking into leg stump. It's outside leg by a fair bit, actually. I'm willing to bet Smith didn't realise that, either.

    He's reviewed it, obviously...

If England can get two or three wickets and Australia go in six wickets down for 50-odd they could be back in it.

Here's Peter Handscomb who, er, didn't look the most secure in the first innings. He bats so deep in his crease that he might as well be sat on the stumps. Oh! And Chris Woakes goes full to him first up, finding the edge, and it bounces before it gets to Alastair Cook at first slip.
