99 times out of 100 you wouldn't change a winning team but Handscomb's confidence just looks down.

    Aus 89-6published at 42 overs

Chris Woakes carries on with three slips in place. Dearie me, that's a good ball from Woakes. There's away movement again, the ball coming in to Marsh and forcing him to play, before it just nips away from the inside edge of the bat. Marsh bunts a full ball back down the wicket and Woakes fields in his follow through, taking a one-handed grab before feigning a throw at the stumps.

    That'll be drinks.

Kevin Pietersen on Australian TV on the Broad backing up: "If someone did that off his bowling, it would be the end of the world."

  6. Aus 89-6published at 41 overs

    Paine 10, Marsh 5

Full and straight from Anderson and Marsh is stoic in defence. He gets forward to everything Anderson sends down, his bat straight, elbows high. Steve Smith, up in the dressing room, is having a practice twirl with a pink ball. Another languid clip off the hip adds another single to Australia's total, and Paine sees out the over.

England are still in it. It is better to have a chance than no chance.

  8. Aus 88-6published at 40 overs

    Lead by 303

A single first up for Shaun Marsh as he knocks the ball off his hips. Tim Paine doesn't have it quite so easy, first playing and missing at Woakes, before he gets squared up by a nice length delivery. The ball flies off the edge and Malan dives again to save it.

Oh! What a waste! Paine knocks the ball away and sets off for a single, before turning back around. Marsh had set off and slips as he turns and Stoneman, swooping from gully, throws at the stumps and misses. Broad, backing up, completely misjudges the bounce and misses the ball, and it runs away for four. Joe Root sticks his hands on his head. Australia's lead is over 300, thanks to that palava.

We've had an hour of play, which means it's time for a change. Here's Chris Woakes, who bowled very well last night after an iffy start to the series.

Something horribly amazing about watching cricket at 3am before school starts later.

Ooft. Anderson draws the outside edge from Tim Paine and it flies towards third slip, but the ball gets lower and lower. Dawid Malan has cat-like reactions at the minute, as he falls to his knees and sticks out an arm to cut off the ball. Anderson responds with another delightful delivery that beats Paine's press forward, before a straighter delivery is whipped off the pads for a couple.

If you've never experienced Christmas in Australia, I can tell you that their songs still strangely refer to snow, cold and winter. I've heard Silent Night and Frosty the Snowman. Today the hotel belted out I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. Complete classic.

Broad goes full to Shaun Marsh, who stoutly defends. A push back down the ground is grabbed by Broad, who chucks the ball rather pointlessly at the stumps as Marsh wanders off to short leg. Marsh looks in good touch, and he easily sees off a maiden.

The ball has moved this morning and it's moved more than any time in the match, other than last night in the lights.

    Anderson 17-7-32-4

James Anderson has never taken a Test five-for in Australia. His best figure are the 4-44 he took at Melbourne in 2010. He entices Tim Paine into a loose drive, before Paine cracks a lovely cover drive away. The outfield isn't quick, and two fielders chase the ball down to keep it to three. Anderson has a crack at Marsh, targeting his off stump, and Marsh gets a big step in as he leaves well alone.

There'll be plenty of discussion about Peter Handscomb's technique, given how deep he plays in his crease, but I like it. I like an odd technique. Stuart Broad continues to Shaun Marsh, and he clips a full delivery off his pads for a leisurely single. Tim Paine looks nice and positive in defence, getting his foot forward, and a flick of the wrists brings him his first run.

I do love the optimistic England fan but I’ll pull out a much used stat- we haven’t successfully chased 250+ in the fourth innings since 2008, so I don’t give us a sniff, I’m afraid.

Judging by the roar Anderson let out after that wicket, I suspect he doesn't think much of Peter Handscomb. Tim Paine is in next, and he pats the rest of the over away.

That was a top-class catch. It flew quickly and it went down to his right. A cracker.
