    Handscomb c Malan b Anderson 12 (Aus 75-6)

    What a catch!

That is a superb piece of fielding by Dawid Malan at slip! Peter Handscomb has not had much fun this mroning and he tries to guide an Anderson delivery down to third man. The ball takes the edge of the bat and starts to go past third slip, where Malan is lurking. Malan leaps to his right, sticks a mitt on and takes a wonderful low catch. That ball was going quick, and Malan judged it well.

England need everything to go their way and it hasn't. A couple have darted past the outside edge. You have got to keep going and hope it changes. England have bowled well in this second innings.

  3. Aus 74-5published at 34 overs

Stuart Broad goes wide of the crease and angles one back in to Shaun Marsh, swinging the ball over his stumps, but Marsh plonks his foot well forward and leaves. Marsh then gets beaten by another fine swinging delivery as Marsh pushes, his weight not quite far forward enough, and Broad follows it up with some helpful batting advice. A maiden.

Lyon hung around and did his job. He will be getting pats on the back in the dressing room for that. The batsmen will appreciate his efforts.

Shaun Marsh is the new man in, and he's off the mark straight away with a single. A bouncer from Anderson, and Peter Handscomb crouches rather awkwardly underneath it. Handscomb's not having much fun against Anderson, and he gets cramped up, prodding forward rather tamely as Andesron swings one past the bat.

My favourite thing Nathan Lyon did for his dismissal, incidentally, was to take a step to the side, slap the ball up in the air, and then he started running off the field backwards as he saw Broad swoop in to take the catch. No messing about.

    Lyon c Broad b Anderson 14 (Aus 71-5)

    Nathan Lyon's boshing is over.

James Anderson spears it in and Lyon, backing away, can't control his shot. He slaps it up in the air and Broad, circling at mid-off, barely has to move as he gratefully snaffles up the catch. That strike to the helmet just unsettled him a touch, I'd wager.

Anderson has bowled the most overs in the series. That last over was his 85th which just took him past Nathan Lyon.

Nathan Lyon is fine to continue. And that's a lovely shot for four! Stuart Broad goes short again and Lyon, expecting it, leans back and guides the ball over the slips and away to the boundary. He didn't half play that well. Broad digs in another bouncer and it's well directed yet again, following Lyon, and he ducks it. Shot! Superb from Lyon, meeting a full delivery and cracking the ball through point for four. Ooh, that's not quite as pretty, Lyon driving at fresh air as the ball seams past him, before he works uppishly off his pads for another two. A profitable over for Australia.

That was a well-directed bouncer. Thank goodness for helmets.

Ouch! That'll hurt. Stuart Broad goes short to Nathan Lyon and Lyon, turning his head away, gets clonked on the grille. That looked nasty, and it's knocked the neck protector off the back of Lyon's helmet. He looks a tad shaken, and Broad goes down to check if he's okay. The ball followed Lyon as he tried to sway out of the way and he took his eyes off it. The physio is out, along with some replacement helmets.

Oh, that's a belter from James Anderson! Full, late swing and Handscomb, without so much as a hint of foot movement, pushes loosely at it. The ball's not swishing around like it was last night, but there's still some assistance there for the bowlers. That's too straight from Anderson though, veering onto Handscomb's pads, and he flicks it away for another couple.

Out walking the dog in Manila wearing my England baseball cap circa 2002. Just been sledged by a middle aged Oz chap and his wife for our Ashes performance. Not impressed, and neither was the dog. C'mon England.

    Handscomb 5, Lyon 4

A genuine play-and-miss fro Nathan Lyon, as Stuart Broad draws him forward to drive and he ends up swishing at nothing. Lyon grins at Broad, who doesn't return the favour. There's definitely some movement there for England, the ball swinging through to Bairstow, and Broad goes full again. It has the same result, Lyon driving at nothing in particular, but the ball misses the edge once again. Maiden.

I've seen Moeen’s finger and it is quite bad. The cut is quite ugly and quite big. This Kookaburra seam has opened it up a little bit.

He’s going to have a massive role to play. He’s got to come in and he’s got to threaten.

The TV has just shown some footage of Anderson getting a bit of treatment this morning, while the rest of England were haring around playing football.

Peter Handscomb stays deep in his crease and briefly considers wafting his bat at a shorter delivery that just moves away from him. Still a bit too short from Anderson, much like it was on the second day, and Handscomb defends, before he cracks a lovely drive away for a couple. A dive at extra cover stops the ball nipping down to the boundary.

Here's Stuart Broad, stomping in under bright sunshine. Nathan Lyon ignores his first few tempters before Broad bangs a short one in, and Lyon sways out of the way like he's doing the limbo. He's got a nice looking cover drive, even holding the pose for the cameras as he pushes Broad away slightly, but there's no run there. A maiden.

Let’s hang on to the positives; there is still a glimmer of hope. I’m saying the maximum they can chase is 350. They have got their work cut out, but if they bowl with control and intent, as they did in the evening session, then they’ve got a chance.

James Anderson responds by thudding a ball in that bounces up in to Handscomb's stomach, before he gets the batsman to drive rather aerially. Another look at Hot Spot shows there was a tiny white mark on the glove - but it was there before the ball had passed the bat. Handscomb cuts towards a fielder to round off the over, while Anderson wanders off for a mutter at the umpire.
