Jonny Bairstow has a grope at fresh air before connecting with a fine drive that runs away for four. Hazlewood bangs in a short ball in response and Bairstow swats at it, getting a top edge that somehow balloons to safety, and he and last man James Anderson stroll a single.

It is another Test of ifs, buts and maybes for England.
As an aside, Stuart Broad's technique of keeping the ball away from his toes by playing every shot in mid-air is genius.
Josh Hazlewood is going to continue.

This is good second new-ball bowling from Mitchell Starc. He has got it swinging for the first time in the match.
The writing is on the wall. It took three overs for our optimism to disappear.
Broad c Paine b Starc 8 (Eng 224-9)
The end is nigh...
Stuart Broad had some fun in that over but Mitch Starc is superb with the new ball. He gets it on an awkward length, Broad fends at it and a thick edge flies through to Paine. That's Starc's fourth wicket of the match and the second with the new ball.

Julian Prior: Hate to say it because I’m a big fan of James Vince but I think he needs to be dropped down the order (or dropped altogether) for Perth and Bairstow needs to play higher up the order.
Matthew Connell: England need to stop wasting Bairstow down at seven. I don’t care if Gilchrist used to bat there for the Aussies, look at who they had batting above him.
Stuart Broad has somehow manged to avoid being bowled first up! That's a fine delivery from Josh Hazlewood. It's right at Broad's toes and Broad inside edges onto his foot, and somehow the ball manages to roll past the stumps! Hazlewood then charitbly gifts England four runs with a disgraceful wide that flies down leg side, beats a leaping Tim Paine and runs away to the boundary.
A turn of the wrists from Broad gets him a couple before a slightly more aerial stroke gets him one. Bairstow has a big swish and misses a wide ball, before clipping off his pads for two. An eventful over!
Josh Hazlewood, who has been superb this morning, will share new ball duties with Starc.

This has been really disappointing. There was no-one who really said it was better than 80-20 in Australia's favour but you dare to dream.
Ooft. Stuart Broad gets a fine ball first up, the ball swinging past Broad's outside edge, before a thick outside edge allows them to scamper a single. Shot! A shimmy forward from Bairstow and he cracks another full ball past Mitch Starc and away down the ground for four. He gets a bouncer in response and he ducks, but dearie me, that whistled through to Tim Paine.

That was the perfect ball. Good pace and swinging. Overton didn't even consider the review.
That was wonderful from Starc. Inswing, directed perfectly, and Overton didn't know much about it.
New man Stuart Broad does his bit to wind the Australian crowd up by taking an age to get to the crease.

That was a classic Starc dismissal.
Overton lbw Starc 7 (Eng 206-8)
That is such a good ball from Mitch Starc first up, and it's done for Craig Overton!
A peach. A genuine peach. It's full, straight, quick and Overton misses it. It cannons into the bottom of his pad, Starc pirouettes in his follow through to appeal, and Aleem Dar raises his finger. Australia are two wickets away from going 2-0 up in the series.
Mitch Starc is pawing at the ground with a shiny pink ball in his hands. David Warner comes in for a chat with him.

This ball is not doing anything. It is soft, there is no reverse swing. Even Nathan Lyon will be happy to bowl with a harder ball and get a bit more bounce and fizz off the wicket. There is no reason not to take the new ball.

A drop and run from Craig Overton, who takes on the arm of David Warner and times his dive perfectly to beat the throw. There's still a bit of shape for Pat Cummins, as Tim Paine takes a delivery that moves back into Bairstow at about knee height. Bairstow tucks himself nicely under a bouncer, and that's the over.
The new ball is available now for Australia.

George Davis: Fantastic spirit and character shown by England in fighting back into this Test, however I value my sleep more right now.
Liam Burnell: Can I get a sleep refund?
Ben Fides: Ah well... At least I've only lost an hour of sleep, and I won't have that sinking feeling when I check the live text in the morning. I feel for all those folk who a sleeping soundly and will wake with hope! They've got this feeling to come.
Steve Smith takes a good catch as he falls backwards at slip, but it's come off Jonny Bairstow's thigh pad. Nathan Lyon puts his tongue between his teeth and readjusts, before Bairstow works a fuller ball away for one. Overton tehn rolls his wrists nicely to get himself down the other end.
