If Joe Root leads England to victory with an unbeaten 150 or more then I'll expect them to erect a statue here next to Clem Hill. I'll chisel it myself.

Australia bowler Pat Cummins, speaking to ABC: "It's a lot better going to sleep overnight knowing they're four down and we're only a couple away from their batsmen, as opposed to three down. Every wicket is going to be huge.

On Australia's tactics: "I think you always look back and wonder what you could have done differently. We were all pretty comfortable with the follow-on call Smith made. As it turned out, they bowled really well.

On using all their reviews: "The DRS has been a bit all over the place this game in terms of a couple of lbw's going over and a few pitching outside the line. There's been a lot of 50-50 calls."

The TV has just shown a close-up of the pitch. There's one or two chunks of pink ball stuck in the pitch, and Australia did get the ball to reverse swing last night. There's some tasty looking rough too for Nathan Lyon to get stuck in with. Pat Cummins was Australia's most impressive quick yesterday, and his spell at the end of the day under the lights was superb.

England have already had their traditional game of warm-up football, and Trevor Bayliss has given them a talking-to. They all look quite calm. It's beautiful weather in Adelaide, bright blue skies above the ground. In fact Joe Root gives the TV cameras a big grin as he wanders past Moeen Ali, who is currently being interviewed. In the Australia camp, Steve Smith is turning his arm over with a few practice deliveries.

  9. 'Do nothing more than bat sensibly'published at 03:12 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

I have found England's fightback in the second Ashes Test as enjoyable and as intense as I have found it frustrating. They have only fired in the second half of the match.

If they had played like they have since halfway through day three, from the moment that Joe Root sent Australia into bat on Saturday, who knows where they would be?

The way they bowled and then the way the top order batted in the first innings has meant that they have had to come from behind.

If England had batted anything like they should have done, they would be 100 runs closer to their target.

England have all day to get these runs. They need patience. They need do nothing more than bat sensibly.

There's more from Aggers over here.

If you were one of the few people who didn't stop working yesterday to watch the cricket, then you're a better person than I.

Luckily, Stephan Shemlit has a comprehensive report of a thoroughly entertaining fourth day in Adelaide for you to catch up with.

  14. Postpublished at 03:05 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

Good morning! Early, isn't it? This is set up to be a thoroughly entertaining day. England will resume on 176-4, wih Joe Root unbeaten on 67, to try and register a historic victory. They require their highest fourth-innings chase in Test, and better a record they haven't broken since 1928.

178 more runs to win. Six wickets in hand. History, and all cricketing logic, is against England.

    And yet, here we are...
