Moeen had got tied down, went for the sweep shot to release some pressure and he's been cracked on the front pad.

It's hit him on the knee roll. Maybe a touch leg side?

It looked pretty adjacent to me.

Six balls in, and Nathan Lyon has a wicket! Moeen's been given out lbw.

He's reviewed it, but that looks out to me...

A double change. Here's Nathan Lyon. Josh Hazlewood has figures of 2-1 from his four overs this morning.

I think Steve Smith is relieved out there. He was a bit panicky last night. He would not have slept well.

Pat Cummins is really very good. He hugs Bairstow's off stump and Bairstow leaves, before a fine delivery shapes past Bairstow's outside edge. Bairstow looks to work a quick single off his pads and Mitch Starc thrusts himself on top of the ball to keep him on strike. A maiden. We've broken out the emergency chocolate cakes.

The two blokes at the crease are more than able. They can't allow themselves to think that the game has gone.

Jamie Watson: Isn’t it just ironic that we lose wickets to the most English style bowler the Aussies have? I got up at 3.30 am to see two feathers through to the keeper. And how I dreamed!

Ruth Brooksbank: The snooze on my alarm hasn't even had chance to go off yet and it's probably all over.

Chris Manning: The worst feeling in the world, when your day is ruined by 3.45am.

Geoff Lemon of the ABC said earlier that Jonny Bairstow had a net at the same time as Peter Handscomb this morning. Bairstow's late on a ball from Hazlewood that moves in, and the ball flies in the air but again, it's just short of the fielder that's circling around. This is a touch uncomfortable to watch from Bairstow, a short ball coming back in to him, and Bairstow's hands flail as the ball strikes him and goes on the bounce to slip. Hazlewood then concedes his second run of the day as Bairstow cuts off the back foot.

My spies tell me that Jonny Bairstow had an appalling net this morning.

    Bairstow 9, Moeen 2

Jonny Bairstow has a loose drive at Mitch Starc, one hand coming off the bat, but the ball rolls along the ground once again.

Oh, an edge - and it falls short! Starc gets Bairstow off the back foot and a thick outside edge drops just in front of Steve Smith at second slip. That moved away from Bairstow a touch, and Smith ends up almost flicking it over his shoulder to the boundary. I'd stick another slip in if I were him. Two seems a little lacking.

Full goes Starc, and Bairstow digs it off his toes, before he cuts nicely for one.

Down the tunnel, probably taking England's hopes with him.

Moeen's desperate to whip a drive away here, and Hazlewood keeps enticing him. He throws the ball wider and Moeen goes for it, the ball flying off the outside edge, but it goes on the bounce to the fielder. Hazlewood looks anguished while Moeen looks completely unruffled. Hazlewood goes for the yorker with the final ball of the over, and he pats it away. Another superb maiden

The conversation will now, inevitably, switch from Smiths' decision not to enforce the follow-on to Root opting to bowl first on that opening day. For what's it worth - very little coming from me, I know - I think both decisions had merit. I just think England bowled badly on that first day, and then bowled really well when Smith wouldn't have expected them to.

Jack Allcock: It was nice to get excited but goodnight all.

Henry Ellison: Classic England... It’s the hope that gets you. Goodnight.

Matt Andrews: Back to bed it is. Can dream of waking up to a Broad and Anderson 150 partnership to bring it home?

Mitch Starc continues and goes full to Moeen, who plays across his pad and nurdles a single away. Shot! That's Jonny Bairstow off the mark with a delightful cover drive. It's full from Starc, perhaps not full enough, and Bairstow plonks his foot forward and creams it away. The slip cordon won't mind the look of that shot though. Starc goes short, getting some bounce up into the body, and Bairstow defends.

Another ball in the danger area. It's a decent line and length, attacking the off-stump. What a start for Australia. Terrible for England. Hazlewood is the the go-to guy, isn't he?
