"Malan answered their call, firstly by counter-attacking after England lost three wickets for 42 runs.

It showed that there was a noise when the ball hit a glove - but which glove? The glove on the handle or the glove off it?

Third umpire Aleem Dar over-ruled Marais Erasmus because of what the 'snicko' said.

Root was angry in that dressing room.

Adam: Can’t understand the calls for Cook to be dropped. He’s had a few lean tests, but to go dropping your all-time leading run scorer and proven performer mid-Ashes series, when you’ve been searching for a decent partner for him over the last 5 years borders on ludicrous.

"It's been nice to score runs. I was under a bit of pressure, so it was nice to score runs when the team needed it, to make sure that I cashed in when I did get a start.

"It was good fun. I really enjoyed the pace that these guys come with, the short ball. In county cricket you're more worried about 78mph dibbly dobblies. It challenges you technically and your heart. It's exciting to walk out there. It's not comfortable, you don't feel you're enjoying at the time, but it's great to get through those situations.

"Most innings on this trip I've been peppered by these guys. I don't know why they keep picking me for the short balls. They are all quality and bowl good pace. It was hostile, tough to work out a way to play.

"Tomorrow the first hour is crucial for us. If we can give them a sniff with the second new ball we give the momentum back. We have to be ruthless. Wicket is nice to bat when you get in. First 30 or 40 balls, especially the way the come at you."

"I was so emotional [reaching 100]. I didn't really know what to do, I almost started crying when it happened. To do it in front of my parents, the sacrifices they made. It's nice to repay them.

"With anything you do, you need self-belief, to feel like you belong. When you get your first hundred, you have that belief to trust your game. I might never get a run again, but you still have the belief to perform at the highest level.

"I do like to be positive. I walked out and thought, 'I have nothing to lose, see the ball, hit the ball and do what comes naturally'.

"You lie in bed at night thinking about scoring a hundred, I didn't even know what to do. You always play it through your head about how you're going to score a hundred at some point.

"Nice to do it under pressure and when the team needs it."

Scott Mabbutt: Having been burnt by hope too often before I fully expect England to be all out for 340 by lunchtime tomorrow.

No… not my National Lottery numbers, but Alastair Cook’s innings during this series so far.

He was out lbw for 7 today in his 150th Test appearance. It was plum from Mitchell Starc.

There’s chat that the ex-skipper might quit Test cricket after the series.

This week he said: "Naturally, there is discussion in any team, senior players talk about the next move.

"Ultimately, I don't know. I haven't made any decisions on anything."

This latest brief cameo at the crease would not have helped his thought process.

Do you remember Ben Stokes? Well, the Durham (and England) all-rounder made 93 off only 47 balls for Canterbury against Otago in the Super Smash in New Zealand.

Stokes was named in England's squad for the one-day series in Australia that follow the Ashes, although he is unlikely to play.
