Dawid Malan on BT Sport: "It was very emotional when I hit those runs, especially with the way the tour has gone.

"In the 90s you start thinking ahead and it's a great feeling to get there.

"We have made headlines for the wrong reasons, now we have one foot in the door and we need to capitalise."

Dawid Malan has always been a very talented ball striker. I think today he came out with a different mindset. He's a free scoring player and this pitch allowed that to happen. England were on the back foot and that encouraged him to come out and play with that positive mindset.

I'm a big believer in team culture. The only way you get that unity is by people sticking their hands up. The only way you get a feeling of specialness is individuals, when the pressure is on, taking things on their shoulders.

This pair have come out and fought and nullified some really high class bowling. This day has had everything. I hope today will have given the England team a massive boost.

Dawid Malan says he was happy to face the hostile bouncers which peppered him around lunchtime. Not sure I totally believe him.

Dawid Malan has earned this. He grafted against the West Indies, trying to find his fluent best. He has been grafting. This moment today, he got a pitch that was true, his team were under pressure, and I think he thought it was now or never. He played beautifully.

It's been a tremendous day for England. They've been asked so many questions. When they went four down, the feeling around the ground was that it could quite easily get quite ugly for England. It felt like the wickets were going to tumble. But Dawid Malan's mentality changed - when they were pushed into a corner, he played some shots. He got lucky but he sent a message back to the Australian quicks. It was so important.

It's the hope that kills you. We'll all go to bed thinking we've got a chance of waking up to 400-4. The reality is probably 330 all out!

Ian B: Can’t remember the last time I enjoyed watching England bat like that! Superb character from Malan and Bairstow. Long may it continue

Sam Stopp: Well done Bairstow and Malan, you pair of absolute legends.

Thebfcbeesblog: Dawid Malan has batted beautifully today ably assisted by Bairstow. Would be lovely to see this through to close of play. Would just been nice to see England finish a day on top.

We need a couple name. Malstow? Bairan? What do you reckon?

The big red top-edged six was maybe his streakiest shot of the day, apart from the easy chance he had put down in the slips.

Well played Dawid Malan. He kept scoring, rotating the strike and finding regular boundaries too.

It's been a hard day in the sunshine for Australia. It'll be a happy England dressing room tonight. They have given themselves a chance.

England were 131-4 when Mark Stoneman was out after gloving behind, and looking in real trouble. Australia were in the midst of a very hostile and very well directed spell of bowling, but Jonny Bairstow joined Dawid Malan at the crease. End of story. For today at least.

Being not out overnight in an Ashes Test match will be a tremendous feeling for Dawid Malan. A thoroughly satisfying day for England, thanks to these two.

    Malan 110, Bairstow 75

Well played Dawid Malan! His first Test century has kept English hopes of an unlikely Ashes recovery alive for another day.

Brilliantly aided and abetted by Jonny Bairstow. What a knock.

  19. Eng 305-4published at 88.2 overs

Maybe Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow are not bothered about facing one more fistful of Pat Cummins, the form they are in.

    Nothing silly now.

One more over! That was naive from England's batsmen.
