What a way to do it! A shot symbolic of his whole innings. He came out today with England on the ropes and he's played a counter punching innings. There are few happier feelings than that.

    100 for Malan!published at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

Well played sir! A big pull to the fence and that's Dawid Malan's first Test century!

What a moment that is. The Waca crowd stand to salute him.

SHOT! Lovely shot from Jonny Bairstow, just leans into a length ball and pushed to the fence. And then a poor shot, wafted at a cut.

England's 150 partnership came up from 274 balls with 18 fours and one six.

  6. Eng 282-4published at 83.3 overs

    Malan 98, Bairstow 64

This pair bring up the 150 partnership with a neat single, These don't happen too often in the Ashes, down under anyway.

Dawid Malan picks up another run, so close now..

I've got sweaty palms! I'm just desperate for an England player to get a hundred. They've got some brilliant players. If one can get over the line it could be a watershed moment for him and this team.

  8. Eng 280-4published at 83.1 overs

One shot away for Dawd Malam then. A 100 could bring a lot of joy to a lot of people.

  9. Eng 280-4published at 83 overs

    Malan 97, Bairstow 63

It Will be Josh Hazlewood from the other end. Dawid Malan to face, a few lusty blows away from that maiden Test hundred.

Malan is hit on the thigh, the new ball is talking. But that's cracking, a textbook drive for four. Super shot.

Why would Dawid Malan not cash in and get his hundred from the part-time leg spin of Steve Smith? I know this England team aren't particularly bright off the field but I thought they were fairly bright on it! Smith bowled at least a dozen balls he could have worked singles off.

  11. Eng 276-4published at 82 overs

    Malan 93, Bairstow 63

That's three dropped catches from the Australians today. Jonny Bairstow plays and misses. Mitchell Starc needs no more than one bite at the new cherry does he? He makes things happen.

Bairstow then edges away for four! Goodness me.

It's very full - a bit like this morning - and Malan didn't execute that drive well. Third slip palmed it in front of a diving Steve Smith. Malan's got plenty to think about...

  13. dropped catch

    Dropped catch!published at 81.1 overs

    First ball! Chance!

A dropped catch. Mitchell Starc is bang on the money first up and Dawid Malan toe-ends it into the slips. Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft were both there and it was dropped!

  15. new ball

New ballpublished at 09:28 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

Here we go - Australia have the new ball with 35 minutes of play left. Mitchell Starc is back into the attack. If Australia can take one or both of these wickets they will be pleased.

  16. Eng 271-4published at 81 overs

    Malan 92, Bairstow 59

Why would you not take the new ball against such an established partnership? Strange.

Mitch Marsh trundles through another over.

I saw Smith say "one more over". Maybe he fancies another bowl himself.

The new ball is available - Australia haven't taken it...

Daniel Davie: An English centurion would be the best Christmas present. (Two even better).

Patrick McIntyre: England could do with smashing some runs before the new ball. Very average bowling at the moment.

Harry H: Pleasure to listen Malan and Bairstow digging in this morning and actually playing some good cricket. Looks like we have a series on our hands.

  20. Eng 267-4published at 80 overs

The last over with the new ball as Steve Smith comes in, Dawid Malan pats it back, and then drives into the off side. Runs are hard to come by against the part-timers but England have scored pretty well today.

Malan squirts an inside edge away - safe!
