History is very much against England on this ground.

An edge from James Vince brings him a single as Pat Cummins angles the ball in to him. Mark Stoneman stays watchful, getting his foot forward and defending the ball here and there, while Steve Smith claps his hands furiously at slip. Nathan Lyon has been wheeling his arms around for a bit now, hoping to catch his captain's eye.

It's been an interesting morning already. I got it wrong, I thought the pitch would be a bit slow but the ball has been carrying through well. There's pace there, a bit of the Waca of old.

You have to hit the right areas, the batsmen get value for their shots. The ball is coming on nicely and you can get plenty of runs.

Meanwhile, back on the field, Mitch Starc picks up where he left off. A superb diving take from Tim Paine cuts off a ball that was heading fro a leg side boundary, before Mark Stoneman tonks through mid-wicket for a cover. There's some tremendous work from David Warner to go tearing after the ball and stop it reaching the boundary, before turning and throwing the stumps down in one swift move.

How often do you get a picture of Kevin McCloud in a cricket live text? So on that theme - what do you reckon these cricketers' favourite TV shows are? Alastair Cook strikes me as an Antiques Roadshow sort of man. Tweet us using #bbccricket or text us on 81111.

England have struck 10 fours this morning. Mark Stoneman has led the way so far, helped by a quick outfield. Meanwhile, there's a huge queue for the bar at the Waca as the players take on their own liquid refreshments. Always good to see at 11:30 in the morning.

An even stevens first hour. The key wicket of Alastair Cook has gone down and Australia will be delighted with that but Stoneman has played some glorious strokes.

It looks like a magnificent pitch for batting.

  9. drinks break

    Eng 58-1published at 13 overs

Mark Stoneman and James Vince exchange a single here and there to start a new Pat Cummins over. Cummins responds with a corker that shapes back in to Vince and kisses the inside edge of the bat before hitting the pads. The slips squeal in anguish, before Vince rounds off the over with another fine looking drive for four.

And that'll be drinks. England have made it through the first hour for the loss of just one wicket.

England have now won the toss in eight out of 10 away Tests. They have won only one of the previous nine matches.

    Stoneman 33, Vince 8

Mitch Starc has replaced Josh Hazlewood. Mark Stoneman gets forward to his first ball before freeing his arms and clomping a drive away for a couple. Starc responds with a short ball that tucks him off, Stoneman half caught between playing and leaving it, and he gets thumped on the gloves for his troubles. Starc then charitably helps England reach 50 with a bouncer that flies over Stoneman and Tim Paine's heads, and runs away for four byes.

    Vince 8, Stoneman 31

An edge from Mark Stoneman, playing way from his body, but the ball goes on the bounce towards the slips. Steve Smith makes a fine dive to his left to cut the ball off. Stoneman drops the ball and nabs a single before a lovely looking back foot punch by James Vince is cut off by Nathan Lyon. Good stuff, this.

Ben Walton needs to re-evaluate if believing Cook should be gone. Firstly, who on god’s green earth will replace him? Second, he will absolutely rectify his poor form at some point (there is more to Test Match cricket than the Ashes). Greatest living English batsman, perspective needed!

    Alex, London

If Cook had any kind of form over the last several years I could overlook this. Anyone else would have been chopped. Time to go Cooky, thank you, but enough is enough. You can't have one rule for one and another for others.

  15. Eng 45-1published at 10 overs

    Hazlewood 5-0-18-0

Well done, Tim Paine! Josh Hazlewood goes short, Mark Stoneman ducks and Paine has to leap up as the ball comes flying through to him. He takes a whack on the fingertips but it's enough to allow Paine to knock the ball down and stop four byes running away. There's a half-yelp from the slips as Stoneman plays around a ball that hits his pads off the inside edge and pops up teasingly for short leg, but it drops short. A single brings Vince on strike, and another full delivery is flicked away for four.

Alastair Cook in his 150th Test was just done for pace. He was right back in his crease, almost standing on the stumps. He looked like he was expecting the short ball.

  17. Eng 40-1published at 9 overs

James Vince almost gets off the mark as he works a full delivery off his pads, but a good dive and grab at mid-wicket cuts the ball off. Cummins pushes the ball across Vince, trying to tempt the drive, and Vince plants a foot forward and works him for four. That's a fine cover drive, just a gentle push forward from Vince, and the extra pace meant the ball went racing away.

The first change of the morning for Australia: Mitch Starc is off, after his four-over spell of 1-23, and Pat Cummins is on.

In the press box, there's a board detailing the Cricket Media Guild of WA's 'player of the future'. Their hit-rate is pretty good. Tom Moody, Brad Hogg, Simon Katich, Chris Rogers and Mitchell Johnson. There's an England international on there too: Alan Mullally.

  20. Eng 36-1published at 8 overs

And here comes the short leg. Josh Hazlewood's second ball is short, fast and Stoneman fends it away from his face and into the air once again. It drops safe but it's enough for Steve Smith to send for the helmet for Shaun Marsh. Hazlewood tries to go full and Stoneman watches it like a hawk, turning his wrists and working it through Marsh's legs and away for four. He has a brief fiddle at the next delivery, the ball hugging off stump, before swaying out of the way of the final ball of the over.
