Trevor Bayliss and Paul Farbrace are having a giggle at something up in the dressing room. Moeen, sat in between them, looks a bit bemused. Another leg bye from Josh Hazlewood starts the over. Hazlewood mixes up his lengths nicely, going full and then short, but Vince reads it well, arching his back and getting out of the way. Vince clips off his toes but can't beat the field to finish the over.

Shot! Down on one knee goes Mark Stoneman and an almighty slog sweep goes over everyone and crashes into the ropes. What a strike that is! A casual push into the covers brings Stoneman another single, and Vince moves his feet and drops his hands to see out the over.

Wakes up middle of the night; baby crying; changes babies nappy; puts baby back to sleep; checks scorecard; A Cook has gone; tuts under breath; goes back to sleep in the hope Stoneman/Vince make double 100s (I see normal protocol has resumed)

A leg bye adds another one for the total for England. This is good from Josh Hazlewood though, shaping the ball in to James Vince and forcing him to defend. Vince takes a big step forward and hoist his arms out of the way as the final ball of the over nips back over his stumps. Tidy work from bowler and batsman.

England have done pretty good. They have to bat for long periods instead of these nice short 20s and 30s. Bat longer, it looks a good pitch.

Once you get in, don't give it away. Make them get you out. They will have talked about not letting Lyon tie them down at one end.

Down the pitch comes Mark Stoneman and he works his wrists nicely to mid-on for a single. James Vince then tries to work the ball through short leg but a sprawling Cameron Bancroft gets his hands on it.

That's a shot, though. Out of his crease comes Vince and he creams Nathan Lyon to the cover boundary. Lyon responds with a fuller ball and Vince, back on his stumps, defends.

The breeze is up, the Freemantle Doctor has his surgery open. The flags on top of the scoreboard are flying at 90 degrees to their poles. Josh Hazlewood has it at his back, Nathan Lyon is bowling into it.

    Vince 21, Stoneman 41

James Vince ignores an off stump tempter and then a bouncer from Josh Hazlewood. He's applied himself well this morning after two identical dismissals in Adelaide. Hazlewood gets the ball to shape back in to Vince but he ignores it, before he gets in behind a full delivery to end the over. A maiden.

There was a bit more positivity from England there against Nathan Lyon. Josh Hazlewood is back on for a blast.

Nathan Lyon hasn't had much success at the Waca - just 12 wickets at 50.3 in four Tests.

  13. Eng 77-1published at 19 overs

Ooh. Mark Stoneman gets on one knee to Nathan Lyon's second delivery and sweeps him hard away for a single. James Vince also takes a trot down the wicket to his first balls and whips a single away. Stoneman goes for the sweep again and makes it look really ugly as he swipes his bat across the line, but it brings him a single, and takes this partnership to 50 fro 85 balls. Another wander out of the crease allows Vince to add another one to the total.

Here's Nathan Lyon, who gets the biggest cheer for the day as he whirls through his warm-up. He's got a left-hander in the shape of Mark Stoneman to bowl at.

Look at that Perth sky! I've got four layers on and I'm indoors. James Vince drops his hands on a few short balls from Mitch Starc, before another leggy bouncer goes over everyone's heads and away for four. Tim Paine's doing so well behind the stumps. He nearly got a touch on that ball as it went flying over his head. Vince sees out the rest of the over.

The new stadium looms in the distance, over to the right, across the river. The new kid on the block, thumbing its nose at the old place, stealing the cricket.

James Vince drives, rather awkwardly, but it brings him a single as he keeps the ball away from his toes. Mark Stoneman looks solid in defence. Foot forward, elbows high, bat straight, the ball hitting the middle. Shot! Oh, that's lovely work, the ball driven furiously past Pat Cummins and away for four. Cummins did well to get his foot out of the way of that, and whistles in a bouncer to keep Stoneman awake. A play and miss ends the over. Justin Langer reckons that Australia have bowled a touch too full this morning.

    Stoneman 35, Vince 18

James Vince rather flaps at a short ball but gets it away for a single. Mitch Starc, the keeper and the slips go up as Stoneman has a wafty drive outside off stump, before Smith comes forward and shouts "I didn't hear anything" at Starc. That's that, then. Stoneman lets the next delivery jag over his stumps, before greeting the final ball of the over with a straight bat.
