  1. Eng 243-4published at 72 overs

Three straight away for Jonny Bairstow as he cracks a wide ball through the off side. Steve Smith had set a field for the exact opposite of that. Ooft! Bairstow just about avoids chopping on! He pushed forward, rather loosely, and the ball hit the outside edge of the bat and just rolled wide of the stumps. Marsh looks agonised while Bairstow strides off to short leg for a firm word with himself.

Mitch Marsh is on! That'll give the seamers chance to rest up before the new ball is available.

  3. Eng 238-4published at 71 overs

    Malan 82, Bairstow 36

Nathan Lyon will continue after drinks, and Dawid Malan gets those twinkle toes going to come down the pitch and force a single into the covers. That brings up the 100 partnership, and these two celebrate with a delightfully formal handshake in the middle of the pitch. Shot! That's a fine thump from Malan, lacing the ball through the covers to pick up yet another boundary.

There's 10 overs before the second new ball is available, and 20 overs left in the day. Malan and Bairstow have played this nicely so far.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

I just feel that everything about today has been Test cricket at its best. It's been ideal conditions and a different type of experience.

    I think it's been terrific.

  7. drinks break

    Eng 230-4published at 70 overs

Four! That's nice from Dawid Malan, cutting the ball past gully for another boundary. Usman Khawaja dived for the ball but it was rather despairing. Malan frees his arms on a wider delivery but he can't quite time it and Nathan Lyon does a textbook long barrier to keep England to a single. Mitch Marsh, meanwhile, is swishing his arms around purposefully. He's bowled just two overs today.

    Time for some drinks.

The Ashes has produced many memorable moments down the years, for England and Australia fans alike.

BBC Sport has looked back through the archives and picked 12 of the most iconic to have taken place down under.

Your task is simple: pick your most memorable moment.

Is it a memory from your childhood, listening under the duvet in the middle of the night as Shane Warne took a hat-trick?

Or perhaps waking up to find England had bowled Australia out on the first day at the MCG in 2010 still feels like yesterday?

Take a trip down memory lane, cast your vote and share your choice with your friends.

    Go go go!

  9. Eng 225-4published at 69 overs

    Malan 70, Bairstow 35

Shot! That's a nice way to get to your best Test score if you're Dawid Malan - trotting down the wicket and cracking the spinner back down the ground for four. I like the way Malan's played the spin today. He's used his feet to Lyon and it's made him look more fluent. Jonny Bairstow turns a single past short leg to keep things moving along.

Fresh from his stint as team umpire, Nathan Lyon is going to have a bowl.

  12. Eng 217-4published at 68 overs

    Malan 64, Bairstow 33

Australia lose a review after that, while England still have both of theirs in the bag. While Australia were having their huddle during the review, Nathan Lyon stayed out on the boundary. He signaled to them that it wasn't out before the giant screen did. He'd be a good umpire. Cummins keeps going full and straight to Malan, and Malan whams his bat down on the ball. Maiden.

  13. Not outpublished at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

Pat Cummins is the bowler, it's jagging back in to Dawid Malan and hits him pretty high. It's the top of the pads.

Hit him outside the line, and it's too high.

    Not out.

Every time play is stopped because there's movement behind the bowler's arm, a message comes on the big screen telling spectators not to move near the sightscreens. It's a bit late by then...

  18. Eng 217-4published at 67 overs

Tim Paine's been excellent behind the stumps today. Another bouncer comes flying through to him and he jumps like there's a trampoline under him to snaffle the ball. Jonny Bairstow remains watchful to Mitch Starc, getting forward and defending, and he's content to see out a maiden.

  19. What have you missed?published at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2017

Plenty. England are currently rebuilding after a top-order wobble, with Dawid Malan unbeaten on 64 and Jonny Bairstow 33.

They came together with England 131-4 following Mark Stoneman's controversial dismissal for 56 - caught behind off glove when TV umpire Aleem Dar overturned the on-field not-out decision. Video evidence at the time was far from conclusive.

Earlier, Alastair Cook failed (again), James Vince edged behind (again) and Joe Root was caught down the leg side.

Mitchell Starc has two wickets, but Josh Hazlewood has been Australia's best - and most aggressive - bowler on a pitch that is comfortably the quickest of the series.

  20. Eng 217-4published at 66 overs

    Cummins 17-3-55-1

Pat Cummins is back, in lieu of Josh Hazlewood. He goes short to Dawid Malan and Malan swivels, pulling the ball down and bagging himself an easy two.

Ooft! Cummins then cuts Malan in half with a delivery that nips back in to the batsman. There's a noise, but it's ball brushing pad. That's a belter from Cummins, very similar to the ball that dismissed Malan in Adelaide. Malan half-considers a flap at a short ball but changes his mind at teh last minute.
