You've got to learn how to leave the ball. That's where Stoneman got in trouble. You cannot control it and you've got to trust the bounce.

It looks glorious in Perth. There's bright sunshine blazing down as Mitch Starc comes stomping in, and Bairstow ducks a short ball before gesticulating at the umpire. There's another waiter about to wander in front of the sightscreen, and Bairstow is seriously unimpressed.

Full goes Starc, wide of Bairstow's stumps, and Bairstow wisely keeps his bat hoisted out of the way. Another lovely clip off the pads, timed nicely, then adds another boundary to the total. This outfield is so quick, the ball just whizzes across the surface.

I don't think anybody at home realises - I didn't either - but Hazlewood is quick. He gets some balls up there at 90mph. He's a very impressive bowler. I knew he was good but he's sharp.

    In a word, quick.

  5. Eng 211-4published at 64 overs

    Malan 62, Bairstow 29

Ooh, a boundary to start a new Josh Hazlewood over as Bairstow rolls his wrists and drives through mid-wicket. A tumbling Australia fielder then allows the England keeper to snaffle a single. Dawid Malan stays on the back foot to Hazlewood, patting the ball down, before he cracks another boundary through Cameron Bancroft at cover. Lovely stuff.

Joe Root, meanwhile, is having an imaginary net up in the dressing room.

All three Tests have seen the first innings poised around 200-4. Fingers crossed for third time lucky!

Full from Starc straight up, and there's a hint of movement there as Malan whacks a single through cover. Starc tries a bouncer but it's not well directed, before a clip from Jonny Bairstow brings up England's 200.

There's then a brief delay in play as two of the bar staff try and deliver some drinks right as Starc is running in to bowl. They get sent back pretty sharpish, before Malan drives for a couple.

A double change for Australia, as Mitch Starc comes on in place of Nathan Lyon.

You've got to have the gears. You've got to understand when you first go out there it's not going to be easy. If you just sit against quality bowlers they will bowl you a ball. It's just that calculated risk, when you're ready to take at. It was clear to me that Malan took that risk. So I like that option that he took. He's certainly worth an investment for a period.

  10. Eng 198-4published at 62 overs

    Malan 55, Bairstow 23

That's one way to welcome yourself back into the attack: whack your opponent in the box. It's short from Josh Hazlewood but not short enough to pull and Dawid Malan, trying to swivel and hook the ball away, ends up getting smacked in the midriff. Hazlewood oversteps as he goes for the big yorker but it doesn't cost him as Malan defends. A single is cracked away before Usman Khawaja, diving at gully, stops Bairstow nabbing another run.

Pat Cummins is off for a breather. Here's Josh Hazlewood.

  12. Eng 196-4published at 61 overs

Nathan Lyon goes fuller to Jonny Bairstow, who shuffles deep into his crease before thumping the ball through the off side. Mitch Starc dives on the ball and makes a mess off it, knocking the ball away and helping it race away to the boundary. Starc goes for another dive as he chases after the ball and ends up introducing his face to the boundary rope. He thumps the ground in annoyance.

Just waking up? Your finger hovering over the snooze button?

You've missed a belter of a day - runs, wickets, controversy, you name it.

Everyone is still talking about Mark Stoneman's dismissal - given out caught behind for 56 off the glove after Aleem Dar overturned the on-field not-out decision despite minimal video evidence. Right or wrong?

That was the most entertaining passage of an enthralling day, with Alastair Cook falling cheaply and James Vince and Joe Root flattering to deceive.

Stoneman's dismissal left England 131-4 and in danger of wasting a good surface after winning the toss again - but Dawid Malan, who has just brought up a half-century, and Jonny Bairstow have fought back gamely in the face of some impressive fast bowling.

    This match is evenly poised.

Four! That's a glorious cover drive from Dawid Malan. Foot plonked forward, arms flowing, and he picks the gap perfectly to add another boundary to England's score. Pat Cummins whistles down the obligatory bouncer, and Malan gets himself out of the way. Safely negotiated.

I'm sitting behind an Aussie fan who marked Dawid Malan's half-century with a one-fingered salute.

    Eng 188-4

That'll be another half-century for Dawid Malan as he and Bairstow exchange a couple of singles. He raises his bat first to the dressing room and then to the crowd. He's played well - he came in right when Australia's tails were up and, despite being a bit all over the place to start his innings, he's calmed himself down and played nicely since then.

There's so much to enjoy about that food arrangement from Karl. Incredibly aesthetically pleasing.

  19. Eng 186-4published at 58 overs

Good stuff from Pat Cummins, going full and straight to Jonny Bairstow, but Bairstow watches it carefully. He nudges a delivery off his hips and goes charging through for two. Cuminns responds with a bouncer and Bairstow throws himself down on one knee, jerking his head to one side and watching the ball just skim in front of his nose. A leisurely single ends the over.

I'd say today has been the quietest of the series so far for the Barmy Army. That's not to say that England aren't well supported - there are maybe more flags here than any other ground. Anecdotally, I'm told that fewer fans travel to this Test, but that there are a lot of ex-pats.
