Lewis Wadsworth: England needed someone to step up and take this game to the Aussies. Step forward Mr Overton, not the fastest bowler but he's getting movement on the ball.

    Smith 11, Khawaja 6

Two new batsmen at the crease, albeit, granted, one of them is the best in the world. England have 25 minutes of the session left and another wicket puts a different complexion on the day. Again.

Chris Woakes in to Steve Smith, a bouncer well over head height and he's given a wide. There's a lot to watch as Smith walks at the ball, all sorts of trigger movements and strides at the ball. He punches a back shot push for four. Into double figures already.

We're not talking Hazlewood or Cummins speed from Overton, but he's just got a little rhythm going.

Kevin Ticehurst: When Jimmy eventually retires, I will happily accept Overton as his replacement. We are in safe hands! Why didn’t we pick him earlier in Brisbane?!

Steve Smith is squared up first ball by Craig Overton but edges away safely for a single. Two in fact.

Overton's next ball is a bouncer which is well up above Jonny Bairstow's head. Smith crunches a drive away for four next ball up, great shot that. He walked into it, battered it away with a dismissive air.

Overton has suddenly found a little bit of zip and extra bounce. That one was fuller and Bancroft was stuck on the crease. Now this next wicket is the one they'd really like. Smith's not quite his bunny yet...

  10. Aus 55-2published at 17.2 overs

It's only Steve Smith in next. Craig Overton got him in Adelaide of course!

Overton deserved that. He's been the pick of the bowlers. I wouldn't say that was a stroke of luck, but England deserve a close call to go their way.

    Out!

Well bowled again Craig Overton, getting movement back in to the right-hander this time. It looked out, and after the review it was given out.

England suddenly have a spring in their step once more.

  14. Aus 55-1published at 17 overs

    Bancroft 25, Khawaja 6

Chris Woakes is tidy but tame, Cameron Bancroft is able to watch and leave easily enough. Moeen Ali may get a tweak soon.

    Another day, another England collapse.

It was all going swimmingly as Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow extended their fifth-wicket stand beyond 200.

But (there always seems to be a but) Malan perished for 140 coming down the track to Nathan Lyon, sparking a collapse of six wickets for 35 runs in 51 balls as England fell to 403 all out.

Bairstow, who made a fine 119, was among the culprits, while the tail was once again blown away by Australia's pace battery. Mitchell Starc finished with 4-91 and Josh Hazlewood 3-92.

Craig Overton has just broken Australia's opening stand by finding David Warner's edge.

  19. Aus 53-1published at 16 overs

    Bancroft 24, Khawaja 5

Craig Overton, making the ball talk out there. Well, to a degree, Khawaja plays and misses at a very wide ball. That was sloppy from the number three.

Overton definitely getting more out of the pitch than any other in an England shirt so far. Khawaja is off the mark as he turns one into the leg side and that brings up the Australian 50.

Khawaja is then able to work away a straight ball for two more.
