They're only mocks Ben - just give everyone a B. They don't count anyway.

Stuart Broad is back into the attack, can he get some movement out of this pitch, a la Craig Overton?

Steve Smith pulls - catch that! - no it's safe. Six! That's the 100 up. Smith looks every inch the best player in the game right now. That's loose from Broad and Khawaja cuts to the fence.

I’m sat marking Year 11 geography mock exams in a cold classroom, I can’t help but feel some of these grades are dependent on whether England remove Smith after tea.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the live coverage from Johannesburg. I am moderating English exams for our Independent Examinations Board and you are keeping me company though the process.

Jonny Bairstow is very vocal behind the stumps as Moeen Ali bowls after tea. Still plenty of sun around in Perth, looks breezy though. A poor, short ball is pulled away for four by Usman Khawaja.

  7. How did England collapse?published at 07:30 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2017

Six wickets, 35 runs, 51 balls, 48 minutes. Here's how England went from 368-4 to 403 all out earlier on today.

    • 03:52: Dawid Malan drives at Nathan Lyon and sub fielder Peter Handscomb takes a fine, diving catch to dismiss him for 140.
    • 03:56: Pat Cummins bounces Moeen Ali, who fends at a short ball and sends a simple catch to slip. He falls for a duck.
    • 04:14: Chris Woakes, on 8, flicks Josh Hazlewood to Pat Cummins at fine leg.
    • 04:18: Centurion Jonny Bairstow has his middle stump is knocked out of the ground by Mitchell Starc as he played across the line.
    • 04:27:Craig Overton works a short ball straight to Cameron Bancroft at short leg.
    • 04:40: Starc take his fourth wicket as Stuart Broad, hooking, offers another simple catch to short leg.

You can have a look at the scorecard here.

It's a Test match, a series, of ups and downs. England were flying this morning, then they collapsed like a deck of cards, but those two wickets and that last ball of the session from Craig Overton have again raised hopes for the tourists.

    Australia are still 315 behind.

Also having a nightmare is one of our editors who, engrossed in our award-winning* coverage, has got on the wrong tram and only realised during a break in play.

You couldn't have served up a more stereotypical Swedish day Anthony. To my mind, all they do is emerge from the darkness for a cross-country ski.

Definitely not the weather for fielding.

It’s still very dark in Sweden, Jim. Sun won’t be up till at least 10:30. Just catching up on the night’s/day’s events before heading out for a cross-country ski. It’s a balmy minus 6.

I think we've seen enough from the last hour, from Overton in particular, to show that 403 will be a competitive score. They'll have to bowl well and take their chances. The problem with England is, they should easily have gone past 450 and 500. But now, to win the Test match, they've got to take 20 minutes.

  18. What have you missed?published at 07:14 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2017

An England collapse, followed by an England rally, followed by the makings of an Australia recovery. In short, cracking Test cricket.

Resuming on 305-4, England cruised to 368-4 as Dawid Malan added to his overnight 110 and Jonny Bairstow converted his 75 into a maiden Ashes Test.

When Malan miscued Nathan Lyon to a diving Peter Handscomb at point to fall for a superb 140, it all went wrong rather quickly as the last six wickets tumbled for 35 runs in the space of 51 balls.

Bowled out for 403, England responded through the impressive Craig Overton, who removed David Warner for 22 and Cameron Bancroft for 25.

But Usman Khawaja, who offered a tough return catch to Overton before he had scored, and Steve Smith saw Australia to 88-2 by tea.

That's flown off a length. You think now, England have got 403 with the pitch just starting to do some tricks... you'd prefer to be walking in to the England dressing room after seeing that delivery.

Steve Smith whipped his glove off in pain but he's OK I think. Plenty of chatter between the sides as they come off for tea.

Good end to a good session for Craig Overton.
